s775 mATX mobo for HTPC

Post by 23-D » Sat Feb 16, 2019 4:31 am

Hi guys.

I hoarded some old stuff and decided that I could build a light HTPC machine for KODI streaming, Youtube and some browsing.
I don't need a 4K machine, 1080 FullHD is just fine.

I'm looking to build a s775 machine and I was wondering which 775 mATX mobos have proven themselves as long runners.
OFC, I'm looking for old used mobos.
The one that caught my eye is Asus P5E-VM HDMI https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/P5 ... /overview/
Maybe some other suggestions? I prefer higher end mobos from that era or at least higher mid range. All solid capacitors are a must.

The components that I have and would like to use are:

Core2Duo E8500
2x2GB OCZ Blades (6400) or 4x2GB OCZ Reapers (8500)
Intel 330 SSD 120GB
I have a HD4350 passive cooled (and if it is not enough I'm open to suggestions, maybe 1030 passive?)

As for case I'm probably going for Silverstone ML04 as I'm limited with only 13cm high shelf.

I still have a P5E-VM HDMI in an older computer and it still works although very rarely gets used. Fan control is not up to what we are used to nowadays though.

I'm aware of poor fan control, I have a p5q-e in my kids pc.
Hopefully p5e-vm has at least those three fan presets in BIOS like p5q-e has.

Anyway, I plan to use Noiseblockers inside, so as for fans it can't be quieter. :)
I was thinking 120 or even 140mm Noiseblocker eloop above cpu heatsink in pull out configuration and two (or just one) NB Black silent pro 80mm reduced to 9V or 7V to feed the case with fresh air.
