I just got a promotional email from Microcenter with the following deals. They have to be in store deals. I am going to email them to confirm. I am not an AMD person - but maybe at these prices I can be turned - at least for experimentation purposes.
At these prices it's sort of hard not to bite. Even if you aren't planning to use it for a while. Especially is you have a Microcenter near you.
1. Cheap AMD Mother boards.
Gigabyte GA-MA78LM-S2H Socket AM3 760G mATX Motherboard $7.99 (if this price is a typo - it's their's not mine)
Price after instant savings, $10 mfr. mail-in rebate and additional $50 bundle savings / REG. $72.99 / 531509
ASUS M4A785-M UATX AM3 Motherboard $29.99
Price after instant savings and additional $50 bundle savings / REG. $89.99 / 420786
ASUS M4A79XTD EVO AM3 ATX Motherboard $54.99
Price after instant savings, $10 mfr. mail-in rebate and additional $50 bundle savings / REG. $139.99 / 452516
2. Memory
Is anyone familiar with any of these motherboards?
Do you happen to know what commonly available memory is on the approved list for these mother boards?
The reason that I ask is that the memory could end up being the biggest cost. I only use approved memory. Often most of the approved memeory is not commonly available. That is an important factor for determining the appeal of these particular mother boards.
3. AMD CPUs - in store only
AMD® Athlon II X4 630 Processor Boxed $99.99
LIMIT ONE PER HOUSEHOLD / IN-STORE ONLY / Price after instant savings / REG. $139.99 / 554204
AMD® Phenom II X2 555 Black Edition $99.99

AMD® Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition $99.99

1. Nice deals. Too bad the closest Micro Center is 50 miles away (kind of far given SoCal traffic) so I have to make do with whatever combo deal Fry's currently offers.
2. Budget memory running at default JEDEC voltages are usually a safe bet. Iirc, it's 1.8V for DDR2 and 1.5V for DDR3. I'm partial to Crucial and Kingston and their budget offerings can usually be found on most approved memory list. Albeit, I reckon any value memory from other brands would work just fine.
3. None of the processors are particularly good deals. I think you can get them from Newegg for the same price. The Athlon II X4 630 Propus seems like it would be nice to experiment on, though. It's a freakin' quad-core for less than 100 bucks.

M4A785-M product page:
http://asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=ef0qg ... templete=2
I believe you'll find memory support information on each respective product's page. An older 780G Asus board had no trouble with 2 gigs of Kingston (DDR2 800), for whatever that's worth. I've built 7 780G or 785G systems, and never had a memory problem. Kingston or Mushkin in all of them.
That being said, those are some ridiculous deals. I was very impressed by the Phenom II 550 system I built for a friend- awesome speed for the money, and this is even better money (and for 555!). I'd be buying, if I wasn't 2-3 hours from the nearest store...

excellent thread.. I just posted asking questions, yesterday..
I put this in my favorites.
I have not attempted AMD since socket A 900 athlon on a kt7a...in the year 2000.
pin grid array is embedded in my own mind like an 87 subaru... both THE champions.
I go back to AMD now..(the prescott is forever BTW)
