PSU double check

Post by fredk » Sun Dec 07, 2008 11:08 am

In a moment of frustration, I picked up a cheap pc to replace my dying P3. The power supply fan makes almost as much noise as a 767 taking off!!

The system has a Foxcon 45CMX mobo, Celeron e1200 cpu, single drive and dvd. Its a surfing machine so I don't anticipate needing anything beyond the onboard graphics etc.

A quick check shows my best option locally as the Seasonic S12II 380 at $76 (or 430 at $86).

I also did a quick check of power requirements and it looks like I will be running in the 180-200w range. I had hoped that there might be a lower power quiet solution, but I don't see any alternatives. The best I could come up with is the Seasonic SS350, but I see from comments here that its brother, the SS400 is not all that quiet.

Does anyone have other suggestions or is the S12II 380 my best bet?

that system will draw 100w load at MAX, likely less than that. TDP for that processor is only 65w. 10w for a HDD, 10w for the ODD but only when its being used.

Seasonic makes some of the best PSU's on the market right now.

Hi,

Here's a very quiet, inexpensive, and efficient PSU:

Enermax Modu series is also really good. Or go for passive or semipassive...

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I looked as passive power supplies, but I would then need to add a fan to the case so that dosn't seem to make sense to me.

OK, I did some reading on the FSP300 and it looks good (80+ certified). There are not a lot of reviews of it here and I ran across one suggesting it was louder than the Seasonic SS300.

I wonder if the FSP and the Seasonic are basically on par with each other?

It looks like the only source for the FSP in Canada is Newegg.com. Hmm. Off to do a little more reading.
