Corsair VX450 Enough?
Hello,
I just want to do a PSU check I'm pretty sure my Corsair VX450 450watt is more then enough. I don't think this use more then 200 watts. I have no doubt that the VX450 will handle it's just I don't want to push it to over 300 watts because they get loud over 300 watts.
Antec 300 (Removing all the tri cool fans)
Athlon II X 2 250
MSI 790XT-G45 motherboard

My computer has an overclocked and overvolted E8400 and a HD4850 (also OC & OV). The only case fan I've got is a SlipStream at the back as exhaust, running at 680 rpm. It's hot, but not too hot. It is also very, very quiet. The loudest part is actually the (soon to be replaced) SpinPoint P120S.johnniecache7 wrote:I'm not totally sure about the fans if I didn't go with 2 intake one exhaust the spinpoint and video card would get no cooling. Being S-flex's and how great they are you can barely hear them anyways.
Since your components should run cooler than mine, you should also be fine with just one fan.

Corsair 450VX is rated at 34 amps on the 12v most 500 watt units have that, I passed on the 400 watt model it's to loud according to SPCR. Systems using less then 200 watts is no where near the max power of the 450VX.bonestonne wrote:The only thing to watch on there is your 12v rail...Make sure it has plenty of amps.
I have a higher powered system running on a Corsair 400W, so there's no excuse for 450 to not work on that.
During summer, 86F room temperature the VX450 starts to ramp up the FAN rpm at 150W AC / 125W DC power as opposed to 300W AC at 66F.
I guess it doesn't get that hot at your location though.
VX450 can even handle 44A wich is crazy, efficiency suffers. That is why they labelled it 450W instead of 550.

Summers can get hot here but my apartment is tiny and cooled with 1200 BTU A/C to avoid me roasting.yuu wrote:During summer, 86F room temperature the VX450 starts to ramp up the FAN rpm at 150W AC / 125W DC power as opposed to 300W AC at 66F.

Depends on alot factors case temps, airflow, power load mine is wonderful I trust anything made by Seasonic. Try getting the Nexus 400 watt model pricey but nothing comes cheap.Aloz wrote:I bought this powersupply as it was recommended on here, it truely is rubbish. So loud!!
Was supper disapointed with it, spent weeks researching. And now I gotta do it all over again
I may have ended up with a faulty fan in mine I am not sure.
It is possible that you got a not so good sample. I have noticed perceivable differences between two otherwise identical psu fans in my Corsair and Seasonic psus. You could either try to rma the product or do a fan swap. The later will void your warranty but will guarantee quiet operation. I recommend a medium/high speed fan (like the 1600rpm sflex) so that the psu will stay adequately cooled at load. A higher speed fan will also be less likely to stall when regulated by the psu.

Ok, now I want also add 2.5 USB External HDD into the mix. There be Hitachi Travelstar 5K500.B 320GB SATA 2.5IN 5400RPM hard drive inside the enclosure will I still have enough power and not break 300 watts.johnniecache7 wrote:I don't want to push it to over 300 watts because they get loud over 300 watts.

Hi, most USB ports are limited to 500mA on 5v supply so that's 2.5w, or 5w if your USB device uses two ports for power.
I think this is a trivial amount and will make no difference to your PSU.
I don't think you'll get near 300w, my Q9400 OC's to 3.2GHz with OC'd GTX260 doesn't really break 300w AC, never mind DC load. (@~80% efficient ~250w DC)
The GTX260 is a power beast, far more than your HD4770 and your CPU isn't especially power hungry either.
Regards, Seb

I've got an OC'd Phenom II X2 (and if I feel like, B55 X4 ) and a passive 4850 running off a VX450 and the max I've ever measured is ~230W.
PSU does ramp up under load, but in my Solo I had to duct my PSU to stop it from ramping @ idle. The VX450 is still the loudest thing in my PC @ idle though...

80 watt dual core CPU, I try and stay with the 65 watt dual cores. I'll move to Quad once they get the TDP under control. Well I think ramping up is unavoidable for any PSU underload and the solo is quiet but I think there bit cramped for gaming more suited for non-gamers. Given higher budget I would've choosen the Antec P183.

johnniecache7, i5 750 + HD5870 uses about 310-350W at load, from the socket (that means it's even less when we recalculate that with efficiency of Seasonic X 750). So until you do some crazy OC on the graphics card, swap your CPU for Phenom II X4 965BE and do some crazy OC on CPU too, then you can do anything and be nowhere near the limits of VX450. The only reason to buy higher powered PSU is to have it silent at ~20-30% loads (that's why i have Seasonic X 750 - plus the fact that at the time X 650 was impossible to find).
