I have a question about these Rev 3 models. I'm going to have in a FX-53 939 and an X800XT Platnium in about 2 weeks. I also run a 74GB Raptor and 120GB Seagate SATA. I live in San Diego so it can get pretty hot in my room, and I only have 1 120MM case fan on the back of my P160 and its at 5v on a zalman fan controller, my CPU will be using a Zalman 7000A on 5v as well. If I got a SuperTornado 300 or Super Silencer 400, would they always operate at medium - high conditions with the fan always ramped up? Since Im runnning powerful equipment with poor airflow and hot air conditions?

Seems like your answer is right in your question.
You'd be well-advised to do everything you can to improve airflow w/o resorting to much higher fan speeds -- whether or not you get the RevA3s.
An FX-53 939 is not bad for heat but that X800XT Platinum will be the killer.
You might just have to accept higher noise for safer temps during the summer.
PS -- think about a large intake vent on the floor of the case. Read Bluefront's filtered/ducted DIY system articles.

I just saw the Lian Li VC1000 and 1100 series cases. I must have one immediatley. Think I could use a super silencer 400 rev3 in one of those without having it ramp up? Since it will have that 120MM fan blowing air into it and it will be isolated from the CPU and GPU due to that large aluminum plate?
I have a x800 right now and it seems to run reasonably cool- cooler than my 9800xt for sure. Also for me it came down to nvidia's recomendation for a 480watt power supply ... dont think so- i think ill keep my quiet 400watt tornado.Compddd wrote:Should I get a BFG 6800 Ultra instead of a X800XT PE? I heard the 6800Us run cooler but a little louder then the X800XT's. With my current setup my idle CPU temp is 35-38C and full load its 55-58C, thats well within normal operating tolerance right?

a "little" louder?:
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! The cyclone fans on those monsters are NOISY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had considered getting BFG Tech's 6800 Ultra w/Waterblock, but the 550W PSU req scared me. With my 460W ST A3, I don't know if I should risk it or not, becuase basically if that were to be true, the fan would be @ 100% all the time ~.~
In most reviews, it shows the X800XT beating the 6800. However, I have heard that with the Shader 3.0 tech for the 6800, the picture looks better from nVidia.
The X800s run cooler, basically because they use less power, than the 9800 XT. I have a 9800 XT right now and it stays around a toasty 55-60 C. What temps does your X800XT(or pro?) idle around? Where did you get yours from / what brand ?

haha- yeah ive heard the 6800, definitely noisy
i only have a x800 pro not the ultra, ATI retail box- lets just say it was given to me . its at 48C right now at 506mhz core - but my case is open b/c im looking at modding my case.
on the shader 3.0 tech there is currently no picture quality difference, only a slight speed increase in certain scenes when games are written to use 3.0 with nvidia (see the anandtech article)

so back to main topic:
i need the 24pin connector for a btx board i have- has anyone seen one of these A3's with the 24 pin connector from a retailer? or for that matter any quiet PSU with the 24pin connector? also are we sure that a converter will work with a btx board, or does the power supply need to be set up from the begining with the correct lines in the 24 pin connector?

JME (http://www.jmedata.se/default.asp) are selling both the ST and SS. Don´t know about rev A3, but I´m planning to visit them soon. Will post a report.

Is my Rev2 SS RMAable?
Hi-
I have a 400W SS Rev2 and it's definitely the loudest thing in my system. Here's what I have:
IS7-G w/ Zalman heatsink on the HB
ATI 9600 Non/Pro
1 gig memory
2.4c at default voltage w/ a Cu-7000 fan at 5V
Samsung 1614N
DVD burner
1 120mm L1A fan at 5V
That's it... I'm not sure if that's loud enough to RMA or not, but I guess I should think about getting the new A3..
Thanks,
Chris

Re: Is my Rev2 SS RMAable?
My RMA request simply stated, "Revision A2 fan controller problems." I'm pleased with Seasonic's service.Schlotkins wrote:That's it... I'm not sure if that's loud enough to RMA or not, but I guess I should think about getting the new A3..

I'll find one of my old extra loud PS and then RMA this one. About how long does it take?
Thanks,
Chris

For my fellow europeans
Since I'm interested in getting a Super Tornado I looked at some online retailers in Sweden and found two stores that sells them. But none of them carries the A3 revision.
I was told that they will get A3 PSUs when the european stock of A2s has run out.
So has anyone found a A3 in Europe or has America got them all?

FWIW
Hello:
I just got an 300watt A3 from Silicon Acoustics, and it has the fan control circuit "hot glued" to the main circuit board. It is a very stable PS -- better than the Fortron Source it replaced, which I think was defective, since I have use several others and not had problems.
So, while I think the SeaSonic is *slightly* less quiet (than the FS), I really like it's Active PFC, better efficiency, and better stability. It also costs more than twice as much (though it comes with some extras, like the cable wrap and ties) -- and they both use the same Yate Loon fan!

Fry's Electronics in Plano, Texas, USA has Rev.A3
I went to a local Fry's Electronic store in Plano, Texas, USA. They had Seasonic Tornados on display, but they were an older revision. One of the store clerks pointed out that the display models are always really old, and let me open up a boxed Tornado 300 to see what its revision was. It was an A3, and I bet all of their inventory is the new A3 revision... but open the box to make sure by checking the label on the actual PSU.
I just installed it in my file server, replacing a 6 year old 250W PSU that was on its last leg. Its hard to tell what noise the PSU is making because of other noisy fans and components in my old file server: Pentium 2 400mhz fan, SCSI harddrives, and IDE harddrives.
I am going to swap out the motherboard with a new EPIA Eden board. So that should get rid of the noisy CPU fan.
Putting my ear right next to the PSU... it almost seems like it isn't making any noise whatsoever... besides a very light breeze sound. I have always used generic PSUs before... I think I am now a Seasonic convert. I never thought a PSU could be so quiet!!!
...now lets see what it does to my electric bill.

I recently RMAed a SS400 (revA2 for a revA3). Couldn't have been easier, except for the 10 days waiting for my old one to get to California and the new one to make it back to Missouri, UPS ground. But, I know from watching the tracking reports that my new unit went out the same day that they received the old one, so I ain't bitchin'.
On the RMA form, I just wrote that the old one's fan was speeding up and slowing down at random intervals, for no apparent reason (which it was). (I think I might have name-dropped SPCR, which may have helped.)

Well, I want to get the Seasonic Super Tornado 300, to replace my Nexus NX-3000 ...(need the extra quietness)
I know I can get the 350w from kool-n-quiet (dont know the revision, but what about the 300w version, in the UK? anyone found anything?
- edit -
Is it worth getting the 350 version instead of the 300 version which is at the top of the recomended list?
