Help ZM400B-APS!!!!

Post by PCGUY » Wed Mar 24, 2004 9:16 am

Fedex just delivered ZM400B-APS and I just plugged the power cable and turned it on (did not connect any connectors to the computer) just to feel how silent the PSU was -- To my surprise the PSU fan is not running and I do not see the PSU running at all - I just connected the Fan and the fan does not run either? Is this DOA? Are there any intellgent sensors that only if you connect the PSU to the mobo that the PSU will work? Help people!

Connect the green wire to any black wire on the atx plug.

PCGuy, that's because ATX power supplies don't power up unless their main power connector is connected to the motherboard, or you trick it into thinking it is by shorting the green wire to a black wire.

Well I took the PSU and connected to my existing computer - Connected the 20 pin ATX connector and auxillary Power connector - I did not connect any other device like HDD, FLoppy drive or anything and turned it on - I do not see any light coming up in mobo - So my guess is the PSU is DOA! Am I right?

So you've got the PSU connected to a motherboard with CPU and RAM on it but nothing else, tried to power it up, and nothing happened? First, make sure that something isn't shorting out the MB, and if it still isn't powering up, you just may have a dead PSU on your hands.

No you got me wrong!

I have a old PC.

1. I removed the ATX Power connector and auxillary power connector from this old pc
2. I connected the NEW PSU's ATX power connector and auxillary power connector (I did not connect any thing else from the NEW PSU) to my old PC'S mobo
3. No light on mobo
4. Reconnected the old PSU's atx power connector and aux power connector - see light in the mobo and booting up!

Remember the old pc is fully working PC!

Ah, I understand now, you left everything as it was, except you disconnected the old PSU and connected the new one. Chances are that unless you've overlooked something really obvious it's a dead PSU.

Overclocking - The word is foreign to me

I do not play games at all in my computer! So my conclusion is that the PSU is fried! I am emailing back and forth with zalmanusa to get this replaced!
What a day

You most probably killed the PSU yourself!

ATX PSU only work, when connected to the mobo. I don't know, what security the manufacturer has built in the PSU, but I read, that the PSU can break this way.

I am not an expert in PSU - but if that was the case there should be clear warning on the brochure!

Anyway I talked to zalmanusa and got an RMA number!

Ive started many PSUs without a motherboard using the green wire trick posted above. Ive never heard of any of them breaking because of it, unless of course you short the wrong wires.

Well, you used a 'trick'. That protected the PSU obviously. As I said, I only read about it. Might be, might be not.
