hehe sorry ed :)

going by that review, it actually seems to perform quite decently! voltages staying within check, and a minimal rise in case temperature compared to a fanned psu.

cost...?

Keep in mind that the test system was not configured for quiet. Two case fans are listed: "Chenbro Xpider w/ 120mm & 90MM fans" -- one assumes they are at 12V. The real test is when those fans are down to 5-6V or less. I have one of these PSUs on the testbench, open right now. Will go in the test rig today or tomorrow. Should have a review done in a few days.

Efficiency is only 60% at full load = very hot :? Coolmax quote temps of 75c - 95c, depending on model.

hrmmm looks interesting. I'm kind of holding out for one of those antec >400W PSUs that only turns on the fan when needed....the "Phantom" i think it's called. I don't think 300 watts is enough for a high end gaming system with one of the new X800 video cards. I could be wrong though.

Only the high powered version and even then it supposed to spin up only when under extreme load. The 350W version is fan free :D

Oh thank GOODNESS!

Say, how did you come across this piece of info on the Phantom? I've not heard that; only saw some pictures and an announcement of fanless Phantom, but nothing in detail like the high power model being load-activated active cooling and the lower model being full passive.

I'm still looking forward to the Antec fanless PSU that was supposed to be out months ago... :(

Yay!!!!! So I see you finally got a sample!!!! Oh happy day!!!! :D:D:D

I'll be VERY interested to see your results, because I think it looks like an interesting PSU, and when it comes to PSU reviews, I think SPCR's PSU reviews are by FAR the best, emphasis on quiet or not, and I have yet to see ANYONE else match SPCR's depth and rigor of testing. In fact, most other PSU "reviews" out there hardly seem to do much of ANYTHING except plug it in, look at the voltage fluctuations, and say "Oh wow, it works--let's give it 5 stars!!!" I find those kinds of reviews absolutely pathetic by comparison to SPCR.

Like everyone else, I am also curious about Coolmax's stated 60% efficiency figure--I wonder if that's correct, because if it is, that seems awfully low for a PSU to be running without a fan, LET ALONE one WITH a fan. In fact, if it is true, then it also means their fanless model is less efficient than even their 120mm-fanned Taurus CX series, which are listed at 65%. I have a hard time believing Coolmax would stand to gain by making the efficiency lower for units without a fan, but then again, I'm not an electrical engineer, so I dunno. But I think until MikeC gives us the definitive word on its performance, all we can do is speculate...

That should make a real nice addition to your PC with the PS outside of the case. :)

hehe i know what you mean v3n - although my sl350s was too loud even before it started revving up.

just thought i'd update this thread with another review of this psu.

*still waiting on spcr's*
