Fanless PSUs getting any better-should I still avoid them?

Post by fearby » Mon Aug 09, 2004 4:31 am

I saw a review of a unit had been looking at which ahd been discussed here before - Silenx Luxurae - review here http://www.neoseeker.com/resourcelink.html?rlid=82601

Is this not a reassuring review or do people still feel strongly against them? :?:

"To test the Silenx Luxurae we set Winstress up to run for a duration of 30 minutes operating the program from the CD and load the system to the maximum we set the program to use 100% processor utilization."

---------------

That's pretty hopeless. Even the shoddiest piece of equipment should stand up to 30mins of stress testing. Even the ProSilence PSUs, which anecdotally at least, have a history of failure, last for at least several months.

What I would like to see (particularly given the fact that these fanless PSUs run under more stress that fan based PSUs) if the reviewer run the unit in 24/7 environment for several weeks to see how the unit fares. And preferably in high load system - mutilple HDDs, optical drives, numerous fans hammering the 12v rail, hot case etc etc

That, in my mind, which be a far better indicator of long term longevity than a windows stress testing program for 30 mins or so.

Avoid SilentMaxx and all of their products like the plague.

I RMA'd a dead Proslience 350 fanless PSU, and they just kept it ( I had delivery confirmation). Ignored all my many many emails. Their fax line is not active, and they don't answer their phones.

I could've probably DIY fixed or salvaged the PSU, but SilentMaxx stole my PSU and won't return it.

Well, at least the test almost too bizarre to be true. Personally. I can't really think any reason why test fanless PSU in a system having two sunon 90 cmf - 44.5 dBa fans and TT extreme volcano 12! :)

To me Zalman's upcoming fanless PSU looks to be something that can't fail. It's external, so it doesen't have to deal with high temperatures like all the fanless PSU's seen so far.

Well, skipping the whole buttonized look is good. If I'd have to make a choise between the current one and the two test ones, I'd pick test1

(Could the blue be a bit more grayish, to match the color of the forums text?)
