Quiet power supply for nVidia 6800 Ultra videocard ?

Post by François L. » Fri Mar 18, 2005 8:44 am

Hello,

I am currently using an Antec TruePower 550 watts and it's noisy.

I am looking for recommendations from people who have this Ultra videocard.

1) Can I convert it into a really "quiet" power supply by changing the fans?

2) Which quiet power supply has been proven to work rock-steady with the 6800 Ultra?

Thanks,

François L.

Welcome to SPCR!!!

I don't think that particular video card is common among
SPCR members. It's hard to say if you can safely swap
the fans on your PSU, -it depends on your other components.
But you will probably be working in the 150-200W (DC)
region where most PSUs start to get noisy.

If you can afford a GF6800U: -spend some more money on
the new Seasonic S12-430 or a ST400(a3) if you can't find one.

I've OC'd my GT beyond U levels, but it uses a lower Vcore
and thus less power. My systems peak load of 160W AC
is not enough to significantly ramp up the fan of the ST400.

BTW, I assume you have already replaced the stock HSF,
since you can hear the other components :)

thanks for the welcome. I purchased an nvsilencer 5 for the videocard, I should receive it within the next week or so.

I am trying to attack the two biggest sources of noise in my computer. The videocard and the powersupply.

After I am done with those I will look at an heatsink& fan, & fans for the case.

Thanks, will look at the seasonic.

François
