S12s

Post by capleton » Tue Apr 26, 2005 5:17 pm

does anybody here know what the audible difference between the s12-500 and the lower s12s would be. Im getting this PS for the connections (3x SATA) and the pci-e, and im wondering if the noise will be noticeably different from the s12-300 for example or the s12-430. Any thoughts?

Also, I saw that somebody in a forum had a Be Quiet! psu, I couldnt find too much reliable information on that unit. anybody know? i am going to try to get in touch with the person who posted it. Thanks,

Hello & welcome:

The fan used in the S12 500 is a high speed, ball bearing, five-blade fan (by Yate Loon), and the smaller S12 units have a medium speed, sleeve bearing, seven-blade Yate Loon. The 500 is a bit louder.

You can just use some SATA adaptors to get what you want!

Mine is pretty quiet now that it has broken in. I cannot hear it over a 7000B and VF700, both at about 7V.

Isn't the 7000b pretty loud? My friens has one, and it is by far the loudest component in his setup, even though he hasn't even opted for a silent computer. It makes a deep "hum" in his case (3700BQE) even when set at lowest with the fanmate.

Depends on what speed the 7000 fan is running at. If 5V, it's quiet enough for most people; I've never heard a hum associated w/it. Unless your friend is running it at 12V in an aluminum case, the 7000 is probably not the sources of this hum. I'd look at the HDD first.

I have no hum. It is primarily a little wind/turbulence noise for me. Now that I think about it, I am pretty sure I have the 7000B at minimum Fanmate speed (hooked up to 12V). The VF700 at ~7V is louder than the 7000B. That would be my first fan swap.

From what I've read it won't be very noisy at first but as time passes it will get noiser due to its ball bearings.

Ball bearings last a lot longer than sleeve bearings expecially in power supplies and on heatsinks, but if a fan gets noisy for any reason you replace it. So they are fine now but in a while they will all start getting noisy?
