PSU fan replacement or new powersupply for <$50

Post by Carlosos » Sat Sep 03, 2005 3:24 pm

My fan in my power supply is going bad or went bad (it gets way too loud after a few hours of running). I opened it already and tried cleaning the fan but it didn't really help. I'm thinking about buying a new fan but couldn't find a place to buy them (or can I use the 3 pin ones with a little modifaction? I got 7)
I'm also considering buying a complete new PSU because it only has 4 connectors and I had to take my CD-ROM already out but I don't want to spend more 50 dollars and it should be as quiet as posible for that money). I looked at the recommended ones but they are all in the $100 area. Can someone maybe also recommend a good, silent PSU that doesn't cost too much?
I was thinking about getting the Thermaltake Silent PurePower TT -420AD (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817153006) but reviews say it pretty loud.

I hope someone can help me in finding a new fan or good PSU.

For 60$ or less you can get a Seasonic 330W PSU, more than enough form all users and the most recommended among the silencer phreaks. :D

If you're going to ask about whether you should replace your PSU fan or your PSU, tell us what PSU you have. And also what other components you have.

I only got a cheap Powmax 400 Watt ATX (14.99 with shipping) :)

Do guys think that 330 Watts is enough for athlon 64 3000+, 3 hard drives, CD-ROM drive, Geforce 6800, and maybe a little bit more for the future?

It's plenty. It will be drawing under 200W.

Then you should replace the whole thing.

Just make sure to get a new PSU with a strong 12v rail, instead of an old one with a strong 5v rail.

Thank you guys. I think I will buy the one Deathlife recommended tomorrow except when someone has another good/better recommendation.

Wow... that's how much most people on here pay for a decent quality 120mm fan.
