Quiet PSU - which one

Post by dhutch » Wed Sep 14, 2005 4:03 pm

Im looking for a PSU to power somthing along the lines of

Foxconn NF48MA-KS uATX S939
AMD Athlon 64 3000 S939 Venice
1Gb (2x512Mb) Corsair, DDR400
120Gb Maxtor Plus 10 (7200rpm,8MB) SATA
128mb XFXGeForce6600std PCI-E DualDVI *Passive H/S*
- And a DVD-RW, FDD, Case/cpu fan.

I have a Nexus NX3000, which im very happy with (its better than the psu in my sonata)
- But they dont seam to do it anymore, and was looking for an alternative?

The first place to look is the recommended section on the main site.

It wouldn't be a Recommended List if it didn't recommend something, would it?

Here.

Oh, and you'll have to scroll down a bit to see the list.

If you're happy with the NX3000 and don't need anything more up-to-date, Kustom PCs still have some, and they're only 27 quid inc VAT which is something of a bargain.

The NX3000 is only ATX v1.3 of course, which may or may not be a problem for you...

ATX 1.3 power supplies can and do have SATA connectors. I'd recommend a fanless PSU for that setup - either the 300watt Silverstone or the Antec Phantom 350.

Fanless would great, but other people have said there very unreliable and tend to overheat and blow?

- have you run a simular system off a Fanless psu, did you have and problems with it, how long have you had it, how long is it on, etc!

I run an X2 3800+, Radeon X800XL, 1 gig of RAM and 2 hard disks from my fanless 300watt Silverstone. The system is rock solid stable, even under considerable load, and has been since November last year when I got the power supply. My system is on for a good 12-16 hours everyday.

Somewhere along the line Nexus made a minor revision to the NX-3000. The newer ones do have SATA connectors (see here). You could mail KustomPCs and ask them which revision they have. Or buy from Silent PC ("only" 52.50 euros)

Still I think a more efficient PSU from the recommended list might be a better choice.
