SLI ready means what exactly?

Post by PretzelB » Wed Nov 23, 2005 9:16 pm

I almost pulled the trigger on a Neo HE psu before I read the posts on the issues with it and my favorite mobo manufacturere ASUS. So I started looking and found a filter for SLI (yes/no) on the NewEgg site. Looking at the results I'm not sure why some psu are SLI ready and some are not. If you look at the Seasonic line there isn't much difference between the 430 and the 500 so what makes a psu SLI ready?

it means it has 2 pci-express connectors and the wattage to drive 2 VGA cards.

Not all SLI video cards need a direct power connection from the PSU to the video card. The Nvidia 6600GT SLI is one such card that gets all of its power from the motherboard slot. However, as stated above, a PSU that runs an SLI MB with 2 video cards installed must have sufficient power available. Therefore, I am not sure if the NewEgg filter is completely accurate in classifying PSU's as SLI ready.

Well at NewEgg you have a filter for dual connectors and for SLI ready. As near as I can figure, the SLI ready tag is only awarded if you have 500w or above, which is why the 430 models for both Seasonic and Antec do NOT show as SLI ready. My guess is that it's a label that Nvidia started or encouraged and will only hand out if you first have 500w or more.

S12 430W doesn't have dual PCI-E connectors from what I know (not even one connector some people say. I should know since i owned one before, but my memory is failing me), and that could be why it is not "SLI ready".

Uh-oh, maybe you're right. I thought the filter for "dual 12v" was the same for thing for dual SLI. Maybe that is where I went wrong.

It means "give me more of your hard earned cash". You dont need dual 12v rails or 500w to run an sli system, even one thats top of the line.

It means the PSU was sent into Nvidia, they ran it through a bunch of tests that passed. They send out a logo that we can then put on the box/web pages etc.

I don't have any more info then that.
