New Zalman Psu

Post by falcon26 » Thu Dec 01, 2005 3:27 pm

Anyone had a chance to check out the new zalman 460 watt psu? I read a review on one site that said it was quieter than any psu out. Is this true?

460watts is a bit excessive, which will cause excess heat, but i gather the reason its so quiet is because its zalman's first PSU with a 120mm fan. i wonder what fan there using.

they claim 80%+ effeciency but no 80+ logo. a little note after their effeciency claim states (230vAC, Full Load). so expect lower effeciency in the states. and also no one will ever have a PC run this at full load, so their effeciency claim is totally worthless.

the only thing in a PSU that causes noise is the thermal dynamic fan it uses. even if they use a very quiet fan that undervolts well, if their effeciency is low and excess heat is high then the fan will ramp up quite fast.

I had the 400watt zalman, had trouble with it, returned it, had trouble with the next. I have a thread about it. It's just junk. The fan ramps up pretty loud even on idle.

The new ones seem to be modified greenpower fortron.
Maybe they did just change the fan and the finish.

I thought there was another thread on this PSU also, oh well..

Looked at some pictures in the thinkcomputers review. It definately is the green power, compare the pics from the Zalman review and the ones from the Fortron Green Power on SPCR:

And here's a picture of the fan it has, Zalman seems to be using an NMB (NMB-MAT) fan again. I think their 300W PSU also used NMB?

EDIT: Having troubles with the HTML link for Thinkcomputers, The "()" seem to be causing trouble.

Yes, that fan is indeed an nmb-mat 1600rpm 9 blade. It will be interesting to see how it compares to the adda in the s12's. - FG

I guess it is really a 1900rpm fan.

tis definately a green power. but then again, is that really a problem? the green power got a reasonable review on this site, so if the fan is switched out to one of zalmans typical CNPS 120mm units (such as found on the 7700 series) it should be pretty quiet on low-medium load
