Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 is officially a monster

PSUs: The source of DC power for all components in the PC & often a big noise source.

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 is officially a monster

6) Encoding two DVDs (Gangs of New York + Fight Club) with DVD Shrink 3.5.0.12 at the same time, one to C:, one to D: with video preview.
Peak Power: 180 Watts
Reference: http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=32942

I did a few power consumption tests on my old system just to see how well the new Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 I have now competes in this area. And I have to say it competes better than expected!

I have done the same encoding test again on my new system and despite that it is more than 10 times faster the peak power consumption during conversion was only 163 Watts this time :D considering the extreme performance boost this is even more impressive! Although I have no comparison I think the E6600 is literally really on the level of an AMD FX-62 but with a way lower power consumption :)

My new system config:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
Asus P5B Deluxe Wifi/AP (probably consumes more power than my old Asus A8N-SLI Premium)
2x 1 GB Corsair XMS2 PC2-800 CL5 Memory @1.9V (Standard)
3x 320 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 (PPR drives)

The rest of my system config is the same as in the other thread above. So my new system requires 17 Watts less power than my old system in this specific test although I have a more demanding motherboard, twice as much memory and 3 instead of 2 hard drives. So the CPU probably saves even more than those 17 Watts which would be normal since it has a 65 W TDP rating vs. a 89 W TDP rating of the X2 3800+ I had before.

On a site note, the Barracuda 7200.10 drives are extremely fast and extremely silent compared to my Maxtor DiamondMax 10 I had before, so I would definitely recommend them as well for a silent system! Also temp-wise they only have 33-36 °C in my system cooled with a Scythe Ninja cooler @5V originally shipped with the Scythe Ninja heatsink I use to cool the CPU but I equipped that one with a SX1.

Can you comment on how the Ninja fits with the P5B Deluxe?

In particular, is it possible to mount the fan on the side of the Ninja which faces the memory slots?

Thanks.

I just built my new E6600/Asus P5B Deluxe rig this weekend as well...well it's mostly done anyways...still have some tidying up and a few other things to do though. Anyways, I also have the Scythe Ninja, and yes, the RAM clearance is pretty tight, as it blocks the first slot, but the fan will fit on there fine...however, I strongly suggest that you install it out of the case...what a PITA it is to install those fan clips!

I agree. I had to install the memory first because the first slot is blocked by the fan. But besides that it fits excellent. On my old A8N-SLI Premium the Scythe Ninja also blocked thefirst memory slot resulting in the same issue.

I must confess the title of your thread threw me a little ;) Usually I associate "monster" with a processor that eats huge amounts of power (basically is a beast) - however you have confirmed what I hoped was true, that the Conroe is indeed an amazing beauty :)

The E6600 is that much faster at encoding than an X2 3800+??? Wow!

10 times faster... maybe due to the fact that DVD Shrink 3.5 -- if it ever comes out someday... -- will be 6 times faster than the current, two-year old 3.2 version

My overclocked E6600 is roughly 40% faster than my overclocked X2-3800+ on most video recoding tasks. System power consumption is ~10% lower using similar components. So yes, the Conroe is nice, but I'd say Intel badly needed it to be.
