S3 standby and psu fan off? or on?

Post by OVI » Sat Apr 21, 2007 11:14 am

In my DIY HTPC I have a 200W Fortron mATX PSU. I've replaced the PSUs 60mm LOUD fan with a quiet 80mm fan which I'm powering from one of the fan headers on the motherboard.

When my comp enters S3 standby all fans connected to mobo headers turn off, right? And fans connected to molex connectors spin on, right?

Should I connect the PSUfan to the PSU itself to have it running even when in standby? Or is it safe as it is? (After the machine has been in standby for a while there isn't much heat coming from the PSU)

In S3, all power to everything turns off -- it's like the PC has been turned off... except that the power button is blinking.

Not in my experience it isn't. Maybe I wire my LEDs up differently. With my PC in S3 it's indistinguishable from being turned off, other than it can be woken with a tickle of the spacebar on the keyboard. S1 used to blink my power lights, but S3 never has.

Yes. S3(STR) on my PC turns off everything, including the blinkenlights and fans.

EDIT: Do you have hibernate enabled under Windows?

I'm sure it depends on the case. My Antec SLK3000B does blink it's Power LED when in S3, but my HTPC (OrigenAE X11) does not, but it's a whole 'nother animal.

It would depend on the motherboard, not the case.

I've had both motherboards in the OrigenAE X11 and both of them did not blink when on S3, but they do in the Antec. The HTPC has a weird setup for it's LEDs and power switch allowing the remote to power on the system from complete power off.

You can get some help on setting up S3 standby mode by reading my article about S3 standby states here:
