Quiet Power Supply for under $50?

Post by ajd344 » Thu Aug 09, 2007 10:17 am

I'm looking at power supplies right now. I currently have an Antec Smartpower 350, but it produces a high-pitched annoying hum, and its bugging the crap out of me. Do all antecs make that hum? I'm looking for a power supply that is very quiet for under $50. Any ideas?

Here are some I've seen, but dont know about how loud they are:

Antec earthwatts 380w $35 (local pickup)

FSB AX400-PN 400w $48 shipped

Tt TR2 430w $30 after mir shipped

So those are a few that caught my eye. If you can suggest one of those, or another one under $50, please let me know. I want a very quiet computer.

-sorry i cant post links, it wouldnt let me

Earthwatts is on the recommended list. Personally I have had good experiences with cheap Fortrons. How about this one for example: http://www.fsp-group.com.tw/english/1_p ... &proid=195

I'm a Forton fan in that price range as well and just grab a yateloon if the stock fan is a problem.

Okay, thanks a lot for the info! I like the earthwatts the best, so I think I'll go with that one. I'll buy from compusa so if its loud, hopefully I can take it back (even it means a restocking fee).

I'm in the same shoes, except I only have two choices below:

Fortron AX400-PN 400W ($48 Shipped)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817104953

Antec NeoHE 500W ($50 AR)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817103940

Which one should I get? Or there are better deals with other models?

I have a question about eh NeoHE. Does the speed of the fan ramp up under load?

SPCR has reviewed NeoHE and there's even a nice comparison table there for noise/load... read it.

How's the options for a fan swap? I see a Yate mentioned....wonder about a low RPM Scythe fan on this unit. It might be something that could be great, but to really make that work best I'd use it in an unconventional layout where the PSU gets cooler room air and is not sucking pre-heated air.

Hello,

The Fortron Source Green 300watt is very quiet as is. It uses the same Adda fan that is used in most of the PSU that are on the SPCR recommended list.

Hello,

I'm bumping this thread with a few pictures:

This is a $43 (shipped) PSU, with a very quiet 120mm Adda fan, >80% efficiency, very low parts count, short wires (they reach in a Solo), and there is lots of space around the heatsinks and other parts for good cooling.

The rear grill is wide open (unlike the small SeaSonic unit), and it also has active PFC. It is a bargain (at $43 shipped) and a very capable, quiet, and efficient power supply.

[Edit: Look for the occasional sale on these -- I recently bought three of them for ~$33 each, shipped.]

The Green in a great choice. Earthwatts is nice, but I think most SPCR users will find the stock fan in need of swappage.
