Q6600 & Antec EW 380W PSU

Post by dnoiz » Tue Sep 11, 2007 3:33 am

Hello,

I was wondering if this setup will run fine 24/7 (BOINC) :

ANTEC NSK3480 (PSU 380W EarthWatts)
GIGABYTE GA-G33M-DS2R (onboard VGA)
Q6600 G0 @ 3Ghz (I hope )
Scythe Muggen (to keep it under 60 °C)
2048MB (2x1024) 800MHz DDR2 PC2-6400 CL5
320Gb harddisk

Or is it advisable to get another (bigger ? airflow ? cooler ?) case with a better PSU ? I'd like to keep the cost down, but it has to be stable.

Thanks.

A 380W quality PSU will certainly be plenty watt-wise, and I have no doubt an Earthwatts, if it works and isn't an Antec Monday sample, could be run 24/7. The 80mm fan won't create much airflow though, and I'd personally get a PSU with a 120mm fan for that extra bit of cooling(and possibly silence), especially with a small case.

The airflow and PSU orientation for that case do seem unorthodox though, and Antec's site isn't too helpful about explaining them - in case the PSU has a separate intake it won't matter(from the circulation viewpoint) if it's an 80mm fan running in it.

The case is pretty much perfect for some BOINC with very quiet or even passive components(as there's not much damping, or room for some). There's not much air buffer, but with those front intakes and good exhaust it should have adequate circulation. Just need to make sure it keeps getting fresh air.

I am running a Quad6600 G0 @ 3 GHz and the temps at idle/low loads are in the 50-55 C range (ambient 25 C). At full load the temps push the high 60's. This is in a full tower case, with a Thermalright Ultra120 and a Corsair 450 psu.

If you want to run the Quad at 3 GHz and be stable i would recommend a bigger case, psu with bottom 120mm fan and good air flow to keep the temps around 50C.

With a low end graphics card and single hard drive this system is drawing 118 watts idle to 200 watts full load (as measured with Kill-A-Watt meter at the wall socket) so you don't need a powerful psu but the bottom 120mm fan will help exhaust the quad's heat.

Thank you for the feedback, without getting broke I could make the next changes, which should help a lot I think (concerning air-flow):

Lian Li PC-7 SE Plus II Black (no PSU)
Seasonic S12II 80Plus - 430 Watt PSU

I would opt for a normal ATX motherboard, but then I need another GFX card. Thanks again.
