Any good and quiet 520W+ PSU?

Any good and quiet 520W+ PSU?

Post by Huezo » Tue May 06, 2003 4:48 am

I have been looking for a quiet and reliable Power Supply that can handle at least 520W. I currently have a PcToys 520W and it is NOISY.
I have a Dual AMD Athlon MP system, four HDD's, two optical drives, GF4 Ti 4600 and a Koolance Exos, so it does eat up some power. My system is quiet except for the PSU, so I need to find a quiet one.

The highest rated ones around here have all been 400Watt units. The main company is Fortron, rated highly by Tom's Hardware Review's Killer Stress Test as being able to handle much higher than its rated specs. It seems that the Fortron reference design is now being used by Zalman, SilenX, and Nexus as well. However, these other companies are using lower speed fans and maybe minimal other circuit differences so stress performance may not be as high. If you're going from a PCToys 520, its probably sourced from one of the louder PSU companies for people new to computers where noise levels may be disregarded. In that case even the stock Fortron with the standard fan will be quieter than what you're using now. I believe fortron also builds a 400W 120mm fan PSU model that is rated about 22dB, that would be signficantly quieter than the PSU you're using now. Good luck!

All I can think of is getting the PC Power & Cooling Turbo-Cool 510 and putting a quieter fan in it. There is also a Turbo Cool 600, but I don't know the details.

PC Power & Cooling PSU's ratings are taken at a higher temperature (40 C) than other PSU's - so even with less airflow, the 510 will deliver more power than your PC Toys 520 Watt PSU.

I know fortron has a 530W power supply with dual fan, but not sure how quiet it is. maybe you can ask around about this power supply. Model number is FSP530-60GNA.
