Earthwatts 380w vs. Corsair HX520 fan noise
Hey guys,
My system:
E6420 @ 3.4 Ghz, Gigabyte DS3
CM Centurion 5, Corsair HX520
8800GTS, Samsung HD501LJ
Yate Loon 120mm x 3
Situation: I know that an Earthwatts 380w would power this system nicely and would be relatively quiet. I managed to score one from a friend for $10 recently (!) and was originally going to keep it as a "backup," but now that I've hit some financial roadblocks, I've been considering throwing it in my main rig and selling my HX520.
I wouldn't have any problem with selling my Corsair HX520 and using the Earthwatts in its place. This computer is used as a general purpose internet, gaming, and movie watching machine (mostly gaming).
Simple question:
How much louder would the EA380 be at load while gaming compared to the HX520? While idle?
Also, does anyone have personal experience with this power supply with similar components?
Thanks in advance.

Please post results if you test yourself
I am very pleased with the Corsair HX520 that runs in my P182, but the Tagan in my wife's Sonata is very noisy. I am thinking of replacing it, and the Earth Watts is half the price of the Corsair. My wife has even less need of watts than I, so I don't want to waste unnecessary money here, I might get her a better heat-sink (she doesn't realise she is folding on my behalf :hehe:) with the difference.
Thx in advance

All I know is I'm not touching another Antec PSU with a barge pole. Downright poor quality and reliability, even if they've been good noisewise. Have had two Truepowers, both dead in under two years, and have heard the stories of NeoHEs and Earthwatts with similar lifespans usewise.
In the SPCR reviews and Recommended List I trust. They don't have the 380W EW, but the 430W is there. Seeing how the HX520W is a grade and a plus ahead of the 430W EW, I'm inclined to believe a heavy rig such as yours would get more value with the HX520W.
I'm in transition from a Seasonic S12II-430 to a HX520W, and so far the saying "you pay for what you get" has held true. Too bad I haven't had a chance to test both your PSUs... but then again, as a previous post pointed out, you do.
PS. Here's the table from the VX450W review: http://www.silentpcreview.com/article751-page5.html. A pretty clear statement on what the noise would be like at heavier loads.

I recently built a similar rig (different mobo though) to the SPCR designed Antec NSK3480 from Anitech and I found the EW380 too noise for me. So I swapped the PSU stock Adda fan with a Noctua NF-R8. Ah - the sweet sound of silence !MikeC wrote:No question the Corsair is quieter. Not night/day but audibly so. Whether this is significant is always up to the user.
