Fortron FSP350-60PN(PF) and upgrades - can it break anything

Fortron FSP350-60PN(PF) and upgrades - can it break anything

Post by hpm » Fri Feb 08, 2008 4:30 pm

Hello,

I use a Fortron FSP350-60PN(PF) ( http://www.fsp-group.com/english/1_prod ... &proid=367 ) now, bought in 2003 actually if I recall correctly.

It works fine now with an E6300 on a Asrock Dual VSTA 775 board with an GF6600GT AGP card. I will upgrade the mainboard and video card and end up with the following:

E6300 Dual 2 Core
P35 mainboard (probably Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R or Asus P5K)
2 x 1024 MB DDR2-800 (OZC Reaper)
8800GT 512 MB
2 x HDD
2 x DVD
Soundblaster X-Fi

Questions:

A) The PSU has 16A on the single 12V rail. Do you think this is enough for these components?

B) If it should not be enough, Is there any chance at all that the other components might be damaged electrically if the PSU should be overloaded? I'm not talking about a filesystem getting thrashed because it dies during a fsck :) , but simply by turning the machine on... I would not care about the PSU itself dieing - if I have to get another one, I have no use for it anyway.

Thanks!

Hello,

It probably will be okay -- the 65% min. efficiency is not very good, though.

The spec says 18A for 12v, btw.

I used this PSU for my configuration (see below) without any problem.
This PSU has all the modern protections, if you overload or overheat the PSU it'll be switch off and not harm anything. I replaced it with a Seasonic S12 I 430W PSU because I wanted to improve the PSU efficiency.

16A on the 12V rail is not enough for an 8800GT. You'll definitely need a newer/better PSU.

Why isnt 16A enough? The mentioned PSU has a 18A 12V rail BTW.

8800GT draws ~140W max.

Xbitlabs has it as 80W max. If it would be 140W, it'd draw ~10A from 12V, and combined with a potential 5A* (60W) for the CPU it'd get close to 16A, at least. But as it is, the PSU should be able to handle it without too much trouble.

* But probably less in reality

Oh. I took the ~140W (138W actually) from wikipedia.

Then, 80W + 60W = ~12A which is quite a bit below the 18A listed.
