Hi, long time reader, first time poster.
I'm putting together a gaming rig. I want it to be as quiet as possible since it will be in my bedroom and running 24/7. I'm hoping to keep this computer for 3+ years.
Comp. specs:
Intel E8400 3ghz
2x 9800GTX in SLI
8gb ddr2-800/1066
Motherboard is undecided but it will be an Intel X38/48 or nForce 780i/790i chipset.
3x HDD's
Other items: Antec p182 (3-4 120mm fans), 2x DVD-RW, floppy drive
eXtreme Power Supply Calculator gave:
0% capacitor aging - 486w
30% capacitor aging - 632w
50% capacitor aging - 729w
Q1. Would there be any problems (due to capacitor aging) running on an Enermax Modu82+ 625w or Corsair HX620 after 3 years or even 5 years? Would a 750w or 1000w be a better bet?
Q2. I want to make sure the computer is as quiet as possible while idle. Which means under 300w (even less with capacitor aging?) for the 2 power supplies listed above since at 50% load the fans start speeding up. How can I calculate the power usage while idle on my hypothetical build?
Help me choose a quiet PSU, Please and Thank You!

looking at your spec thats not going to be a very quiet PC in any way, so i would just suggest getting an unmodded 800+ watt PSU.
if your going to replace the heat sinks and fans on your cpu and graphics cards then simply mod the PSU with a quieter fan (voids warranty) and if you want a quiet PC you going to NEED to as those 9800GTXs as standard will make a right old noise.
you might need to consider water cooling for a rig with the horse power you think you need with the noise lvls you want.

My non-silent gaming PC built last year but quiet-enough-fan-noise-characteristics-to-sleep-with-it-a-few-feet-away:
Antec Sonata III (should have gotten a Solo in hindsight)
NX
1x Nexus 120mm case fan at 5v
Asus P5w DH Deluxe mobo, no active cooling
E6600 cpu
Corsair HX620
3x WD5000AAKS
Zalman CNPS 9500 at 5v
single 8800GTX at 50% fan using rivatuner.

Greetings & welcome to SPCR!
That machine should idle between 100-150watts, and it might peak at 250-300watts? (Actually, these estimates may be too high!) I think the Enermax 425 or 525 would be fine at peak, and they would be slightly better at idle than the 625. The Corsair is a half-step behind on both efficiency and noise level, I think.
