Help... should I buy a new PSU[?]

Post by EvoFire » Wed Jan 14, 2009 1:24 am

I'm upgrading my computer to something a little faster for the interim while waiting for Starcraft 2 to come out.

What I have is:
Athlon 64 Winchester + overclock
ASUS A8V-E
1GB of Corsair DDR 400
ASUS 8800GS 384MB w/ overclock
Samsung T series 500GB
DVD writer
Sound Blaster live 5.1

Right now I'm running a Seasonic Super Tornado 300W that's 3 years old. This setup is a bit on the tight side, but everything is free except for the video card, but the parts won't change anymore, it just the power supply.

I'm looking at a Corsair SilentXtream 500W or 400CX right now if I need to upgrade. Please advise... anyone?

SS is a high quality PSU. As it stands now, there is nothing wrong with it. It all depends on what you have in mind for your new system. If you plan on Phenom II and more than one 4870-like GPU with some extra storage, then I would consider upgrading the PSU. But as I said, if you stay with one CPU and one GPU you should be fine unless you overclock by a lot:)

When I build a completely new computer, I'll definitely buy a new Seasonic for it, but I'm currently upgrading from the computer I have on my sig to the one I listed on the post

You will have plenty of headroom with a 300W PSU for the puter in the post :)

Check out this link, where members of this forum has told how much they run with 300W PSUs:)
