Corsair HX850W: Is it really silent?

Post by Rehto » Wed Jun 10, 2009 1:40 am

I googled HX850W and found a HardOCP review of it which does
talk about noise (or the lack thereof). I'm not going to build
a 'puter that would go to 75-80% load. I used an online
calculator to get a rough estimate of the load and I got
420W (gonna have two Asus GTX 260s and a Phenom II
X4 810.) I just think if it is as quiet as my HX520W
is now I'm good to go :) .

So I was asking if there are any of you who have
(I just got the impression this is a quite new product)
or who are about to buy one?

I have the HX850, and no its definitely not as quiet as the HX620. Either I have a defective unit or its just not that quiet at all. It's all fan noise too, if I stop the fan, the noise is gone.

Corsair provides charts for their PSU noise levels (The 620w and 520w appear to have the same noise charts), and I think my unit is probably fine based on them (~4dba higher):

(you'll need to fix .com, as I can't post links yet)

It's a Channel Well thing I guess. It seems like it's great quality and it has good efficency, but they still don't do super silent PSUs. Which is too bad, they should improve the fan controller on the DSG platform.
