seasonic or Nexus ?

Post by lightw » Fri Jan 29, 2010 12:12 pm

Hi everyone!
a question about a "perfect " psu choice for an i7 pc.
the case is a an Antec p 183

I think that with 1 only vga card (1 hd ssd) a 500W psu it's quite good.

I want a quite, really quiet ,one: so a seasonic x650 could really a good improvement in my case ? or a nexus nx5000 is perfect anyway.

Actually the first cost really more $$ BUT it could be fanless in my config. (<200W)

~1db cost a lot of $$ :))

Thank you for your reply.

You got it -- it will be fanless >90% of the time. Maybe all the time -- probably depends on your vga card and how hot your room gets.

Antec CP-850 is mandatory for the case you got. Simply superior price/performance ratio, and according to SPCR's review some truly excellent noise ratings.

thank your for replies,

looking here:

Antec 850 it's good but seasonic and even nexus (that costs less) it's really better.

the question it's "solved " by the numbers but I would know if there so big difference ( according also of tester says).

INAUDIBLE is written for nexus is it true ?

MikeC : yes, I wish that the case will be able to put out hot air (even in the summer time).

I just got a Dell Studio XPS 8100 i7-860. Man, what a build difference from my Optiplex. They cheaped out big time. Not a 120mm fan in the bunch. 80, maybe 92mm for back fan, looks like a stock CPU fan and a Chiconly PSU with again an 80mm fan, which does not seem too loud.

I already replaced the vid card with a passive model from my old computer. I play no games except fro Solitaire, so is fine with me.

I do not understand how anyone can put up with one of those small high revving fans. Already made a big difference.

But, I am also thinking that a Seasonic 650 would be silent most if not all of the time. Plus provide plenty of good clean power.

Right now I am working away and one of the fans seems to have spun down and it is actually quite bearable. there is no way in BIOS to see how fast they are spinning which I wold dearly love to know :) But wow, it seems to be an order of magnitude (to my sensitive ears) better right now. I will have to explore why this is? Fan control? Bearings working in?

thanks, Dave

I have identified the PSU as the next most noise producing element. Shame to pay 1K for a computer and then have to put a decent PSU in :( I should have built!

I am thinking of this one Nexus RX-5300 530 Watt Quiet Tranquillity Power Supply as it is modular. And about $50 cheaper than the Seasonic 650 which I really like.

the case and CPU fans in the new rig are small but actually very quiet.

Let the record state that all Dell did here was put in a quiet CPU and case fan. No grommets on the hard drive, no insulation, no rubber feet on the case (I have some new old stock case foam I am resting the entire case on) and a PSU that instead of a nice 120mm fan that hardly ever comes on a BS cheap ass Chicony with stamped grill and 80mm fan. Sheesh, they have cheaped out on this one big time. Studio 8100 XPS. Shame on you Dell, you have lost much of my respect. I guess I was spoiled by my Optiplex.

I think I will order that PSU and then it shall be as quiet as it is going to get. And keep in mind, to get it this quiet i had to remove the Vid card that came with it. Crap, out of the box this was like a 2001 computer that had never heard of proper sound management.

i agree with Parappaman. the CP-850 may be alot of watts but its a must have with that case and the reviews were great.

looks like the seasonic jumps to 31dba around 340 watts but at low temps fan is off. if the rx nexus is as good and silent as the nx it will be a tough call. you do get full modular and gold with seasonic. part modular with rx and no modular with nx which i believe are both bronze. these 3 psu units are killing me and the final component in my next build

how many watts of power do you think i would draw with this setup. the reason im asking is the fans kick in to 31dBA at about 340 watts

-AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz
-G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
-ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO/U3S6 AM3 AMD 785G HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0
-2 Western Digital Caviar RE 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0G
-lite on IDE dvd burner iHAP422-08
-creative SB X-FI audio 9400
-1 120mm and 2 92 mm fans
-memory card reader/writer
-antec solo case

i plan to add a blu ray drive later on, using onboard GPU, and probably add 2 more 2 gig memory sticks down the road

according to this
http://www.antec.outervision.com/PSUEngine

your config seems request 238W

(without video card).

My doubts are about the Semi fanless feature of the seasonic.
I think that anyway every 2-3minutes, in a not so cold environment,
the fan starts.

Note those 3 FAN can make a lot of noise (I can hear on my p183 the 2 tricool fans even at the LOW <1000rpm switch position an dcover any other noise imho)

Forgot video card? Otherwise it would be impossible for your setup to draw that much power!
