Is the right 8 pin power connector on Seasonic X-650?

Is the right 8 pin power connector on Seasonic X-650?

Post by accipiter » Sat Mar 20, 2010 1:14 pm

Hello,

The last time I attempted a build myself I bought incompatible MB & Power supply :(, and dont want to repeat the mistake this time !

My previous error was to get a MB with an 8 pin CPU power socket, and an PSU with a 4 pin plug.

this time around.... I am looking at using a Seasonic X-650 with a Gigabyte GA-P55-UD3. I was hoping that someone could galnce at the specs of MB abd PSU and help me interpret the techno speak :)

MB here: http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Gigabyte ... IIRAID-ATX

PSU here: http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/650W-Sea ... s-The-Best!

The MB has a 12 pin socket, but the seasonic 8 pin plug is listed as an 8 pin EPS12V connector. I thought this was different to the version used on domestic MBs..

Could someone clarify this for me please ?[/url]

I'm looking at this picture (http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/FileList/Ima ... d3_big.jpg) from the Gigabyte site, and it has an 8 pin connector (upper right hand corner).

A MB, with an 8 pin connector) will work fine with a PS that has a 4 pin connector. The additional pins provide a higher current capability. The additional pins may only be needed with a very high end CPU that was way OC'd with high Vcc.

Okay, I think I may have got this now.... please jump in if I'm wrong.

8 pin CPU connectors are refrred to as EPS12V.

The Seasonic X-650 is listed as having:

1 x 4pin ATX 12V
8 x 4pin Molex
4 x 6+2pin PCI-E Power
2 x 8pin CPU +12V
2 x FDD Power
8 x SATA Power

The manufacturers website has a helpful image:

...So I'm okay, and I guess if I wanted to I could use this beastie to run a dual CPU setup if required (!)

I found this helpful too: http://www.playtool.com/pages/psucompat/compat.html

Sorry if this is a daft question, but I want to be sure it works :)

I just finished building my computer with the Seasonic X650. It has the option to run either 4 pin or 8 pin. My Asus motherboard had an 8 pin connector with 4 pins covered so it was optional as well.

Yup, 8pin is optional. 4pin is needed. Else your system wont boot.

If you've got an 8pin socket and a 4pin psu connector. Just put it in. Your system will boot with a 4pin.
