i5 + 150 PicoPsu?

Post by cman00 » Tue Jun 22, 2010 11:35 am

Does anyone know if I can run an i5 off of a 150 Pico/Brick combo? After my father saw my desktop and then my Zino, he asked if I would build him a new PC that would last 5+ years.

I'm thinking of:
i5 (using integrated video)
an itx or matx mobo w/ USB 3.0
4 GB Ram
320 GB notebook HD
150 Pico w/ 150 brick
DVD drive

He'll be using this for everyday computing. I seriously doubt he'll be doing any encoding to push the rig for any significant amount of time. I know I can probably do an e7xx or e8xx for him and he'd be happy, but with the price differential being nil between an e8400 & an i5, I just don't see a reason to stay with the current standard.

Thoughts?

How about SSD instead of hard drive? I bet that hard drive becomes a bottleneck before 2015. Since there is a target for lifetime, maybe all the parts should have 5 year warranty, or at least 3. I know that some PSUs have 5 or even 7 years, but don't know what's the situation with pico/brick.

+1. Sure, the PicoPSU has remarkable efficiency, but it's also going to be more expensive than a regular ATX PSU. I got my Antec EA-380 from Newegg for just $35 (only 3 years warranty, though). The SeaSonic S12II series has 5 years warranty, I believe.

I think you're getting a bit off topic. I'm not looking for 5 year warantees. I want to 5 yr proof the PC with an i5 and USB 3 and/or SATA III support (if available).

My question remains: will a 150 W pico + adapter power this setup?

It will easily power it.

I have an i3 with a pico 150.

How much wattage are you pulling when both the CPU & IGP are screaming?

Im not sure my watt meter is accurate, as i get around 45W idle and others report roughly 30W.

I havent ever fully loaded it with furmark or whatever, but i have encoded lots of videos at 100% CPU. Never monitored the power usage while doing this, but will do tonight and see what it reports.

I actually do have power consumption values. Yes, the PicoPSU 150 should be enough.

Silverstone Sugo SG06B (300W SFX PSU)
Intel DH57JG
Intel Core i3-530 2.93GHz
Kingston 2x2GB DDR3 1333 CL9 1.5V
Western Digital Caviar GP 1TB WD10EADS

boot: 55W
idle: 30W
CPU Load: 70W
GPU Load: 45W
CPU+GPU Load: 80W

CPU Load - Intel Burn test
GPU Load - Furmark

Thanks jeddlover. It seems so long as I stick with the 2-core i5 (650, which was my plan), then I should be fine.

Thanks for digging up those numbers.

Seems something is wrong with my PC, or something is wrong with my power meter.

Idle: ~62W
Full Load (Furmark & Prime95): ~132W

Even when i stopped Prime95 but kept Furmark running, it went back to ~62W.

As other mentioned will work with no problem.
Namheul I do not know your system but if is just a simple i3 or i5 with one HDD and DVD then your values are wrong. What power meter are you using? Are you reading Watt or VA?
And USB 3.0 is just 3x USB 2.0 as performance but also physical since is not using only 4 wires two for power and two for data as USB 2.0 but is using a total of 9 wires two for power 6 for data and one additional GND so USB 3.0 is not future proof. I wait to see a optical data interface by next year.

Its a i3-530 on a DH57JG. 1 3.5" HDD and laptop ODD.

The power meter was a cheap $20 one. Im pretty sure im reading watts.
