Recommended PSU for Mini-ITX NAS?

Post by yzh » Tue Aug 31, 2010 10:11 am

Hi all,

I plan to create a mini-itx server that will be mainly used for storage / NAS and serving media. It will probably run 24/7, so low energy usage is a plus.

I think I go for the Zotac H55ITX mainboard + Intel Core i3 530 cpu.
I will probably start with 2 harddisk, but plan to expand later.

The case will be the Lian Li PC-Q08, so the PSU must fit in there as well.

The PSU is the only thing I haven't figured out yet. Any recommendations?

Can't recommend a PSU - but the mobo I would got for the Intel or Gigabyte - both have lower power consumption than the Zotac.

Do you have any specific models you can recommend? I like the Zotac because it has 6 SATA ports, so plenty of room to expand HDD's in the future. But definitely want to check out the Intel or Gigabyte boards if they have lower power consumption.

Well, each manufacturer has only one model:
Intel DH57JG
Gigabyte GA-H55N-USB3

However, I think both only have 4 SATA ports each.

Hmm nice, I think I can live with 4 SATA ports though.. thanks!

Honestly, if it's just a NAS, which it is unless you're planning on decoding the media on their with something like MPD, one of the Supermicro Atom boards might be best.

I've just picked up a GA-D525TUD for my NAS (pictures coming soon in my thread).. runs Linux just fine (running SAMBA and UPNP!!!)

It has 4 SATA ports, 1 IDE and I brought a PCI SATA card (3 SATA)

If you go for a fully fledged Zotac, any high efficiency PSU will work (I guess we're talking about 150-180W DC under stress for a fully populated Q08): you have lot of recommendation among SPCR favourites.

Otherwise, if we were talking about an Intel Tom Cove coped with relatively moderate capacity HDDs, maybe the Pico-120 should have been better suited (i.e. massive tower heatsink for the CPU).

Luca
