my rig ..need help

Post by lukem » Fri Oct 01, 2010 1:50 am

i am in the process of buying a Lian Li htpc case for my Asus M2N68 mobo with 2 optical drives and my nvidia 8600 gt or gtx video card.

i have at present a 500x psu, but it is noisy and i am thinking of replacing it for a more quieter one.

looking for recommendations:

i mostly watch blu rays and dvds and sometimes play some games.

Check the recommended list, then figure out how much you want to spend. If money is no object then go for a Seasonic X-400 or X-650.

Alternatively you could try a fan-swap on your current PSU, but please don't even contemplate this unless you are pretty technically competent, due to the whole risk of electrocuting-your-face-off thing...

Hi lukem, I don't think you need much power for that PC, 350w likely to be enough. (My rig will run fine on S12-II 330)
Budget?

My quick recommendations for known quiet PSUs:

Modular:
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/500W-Coo ... odular-PSU

Normal:
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/330W-Sea ... -120mm-Fan

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/380w-Sea ... oHS-plus80

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/385w-Ene ... nc-Twister

Lots other possible options and vendors but think any of above would work well for you.

Regards, Seb

Can't you see by yourself the difference in the relevant photos? Detachable cables, an often useful feature in small and/or not perfectly engineered cases.

However, I guess this isn't the proper section to put your questions, but the System Advice one should be, or even the Newcomers Briefing Room.

As far as I know you can have almost everything with that sum.

Which kind of people are you? Someone who wants the best he can afford, or someone who'd rather to have the most affordable but still good products?

On scan.co.uk you have two exemplary products: the Corsair CX400 (£27) and the Seasonic X-560/X-400FL (£115). Which one is right for you?

Obviously there's also a lot of other things just in between.

Yes, it is: but its overall build quality is not equally good/consistent, and its electrical performances are not such stellar ones (even if well above average).
I guess there are also other "good kids" in town.
