X-460 or X-650 ?

Post by appletree » Fri Nov 05, 2010 11:25 am

Will fanless X-460 be enough for slightly overclocked quad and HD 6850 GPU ? Especially if you consider it will be placed in p182 case ? Could it work completely without any additional fan ? If not so, would it be enough to ad some low RPM fan (like Nexus@5V) in the mid section (between PSU and HDD section) to do the job ?

Or is X-650 a better choice for such a setup ? I would really like the PSU to be passive at least at idle as I don't want to make any "risks" e.g.: as with my current PSU: Enermax 82+ which while relatively quiet has sound signature that I don't like very much (it sounds different than the samples in SPCR reviews).

They both come at similar prices, so you have to wonder how much you value a completely passive unit. I'd go for the X-650 in any case, with your setup I'm pretty sure the fan won't spin unless heavily loaded. Also, you might save something getting a X-560 (which, on a side note, will be more than enough if you want to add a second HD6850 sometime in the future).

You mean CPU at full load and GPU at idle could be still powered passively ? ( I don't mind if CPU + GPU both at load will cause the fan spinning). Is there any difference between x-560, x-650 in regards of at which power draw the fan starts spinning ? I might consider x-750 as well if that would allow me to run CPU at full load without the fan spinning (even though it would be otherwise a total overkill for my system)

For the fanless: I really wouldn't worry at all if it's bottom mounted and with some open space at the top (as it looks like in the p182 judging by the pictures).
I think of putting mine (if I buy one) at the top of the case, above some hot components, which should be significantly worse.

I'd purchase X-560 as it's cheaper and has a fan for peace of mind compared to X-400. After all, they both are fanless at low load which negate the benefit/premium of X-400 fanless advantage.

Just putting it out there, the X-400 has 700-something watt rated parts. So as long as it has decent ventilation, it can be driven fairly hard.

the center fan in the power supply compartment of the p182 will help cool whatever power supply you put in there, but i would try taping off all of the case ventilation holes around the power supply, so that the air gets forced through the power supply, instead of around it.

you don't want to go completely fanless in that lower compartment.
