Is Corsair AX850 going to be enough..?

Is Corsair AX850 going to be enough..?

Post by donationbox » Wed Jan 26, 2011 12:26 pm

Hello,

I'm building a new system with the following setup:

Intel Sandy Bridge 2600K
Noctua NH-D14 CPU Heatsink
AUSS P8P67 Pro Motherboards
4x G.SKILL Ripjaws X F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL 4GB
1x Intel X25-M 80GB 2.5IN SATA2 SSD
2x Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB
2x Western Digital Caviar Green 500GB
2x EVGA GeForce 570 Superclocked
1x Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-FI Titanium
Coolermaster Haf X EATX Tower Case

I'm taking SDD, sound card and 500GB HDD from my old system. Is Corsair AX850 going to be enough after overclocking CPU? Also, does anyone have any suggestion on what parts I can change to reduce the system noise as much as possible..? Especially the case and power supply?

Thanks

It should be. I'll be running Dual X5650's (not overclocked) on an AX750 and it should be fine too. Just for kicks, punch your stuff into http://extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine

Get a Raven 2 /Fortress 2 ?
I just mounted my system with GTX 470 into it and so far stock fermi fan seems to be running around 5% slower which translates into 400-500 rpm less compared to my previous Tsunami with side panel completly removed.

Sandy Bridge is extremely frugal even oced: the 2500K, which stays actually under 70W, around 4GHz add just less than 30W more, IIRC.

So, if you're talking about real life, not benching, the AX-850 is more than enough, with the SLI accounting from about 380 to about 470W and the CPU going around 110W (benching should add maybe another 150-200W to power consumption, mostly due to the SLI pair).

Is the Corsair a good choice? It strictly depends what you are talking about: idle? gaming? low loads (web surfing and office productivivity)? Do you fold? Check the relevant SPCR charts looking the best option at the different power levels.

About the case, the HAF is widely open, so it isn't a quiet case on its own, but it's well suited at effectively cooling an high end SLI.
There are quieter option? Maybe some Silverstone Raven (One or Two), maybe some Corsair (I'm currently evaluating the 600T, but it's far from perfect).
If you go for a gaming case like the HAF, more than paying attention to the PSU you should pick carefully those 570: I mean there are someone with pre-installed AC Accelero Xtreme Plus, and it should be the way to go (but not in a Raven or a Fortress with their rotated motherboard tray) in order to have a relatively quiet high end system, IMO.

Thanks for the reply guys. I'll definitely take look at the Raven or Fortress, although I really like the air flow of HAF X.
I was looking for pre-modified VGA like MSI N570GTX Twin Frozr II OC because I couldn't find a VGA cooler for GTX 570. But it seems Accelero Xtreme Plus supports GTX 570/580 now (http://www.arctic.ac/en/p/detail?sArticle=18.%3F) and I'm definitely going to get those!

As for Corsair, I read the review here at SPCR, and it seems like a quite and efficient PSU. I'll let you know about my final decision!

Thanks for your replies. I guess I will go with Corsair AX850. I looked at Raven / Fortress 02, and agree they will be more quite than Haf X. But I will probably pick Haf X because of the much better airflow.

I'm think about the video cards. MSI GTX570 Twin Frozr II seems much more quite than stock version. Also, AC Accelero Xtreme Plus is compatible with GTX 570/580 with proper mounting, which should be more quite/cooler than MSI but at additional ~$100. Also, MSI also has 3 years of warranty where EVGA + AC Accelero has lifetime warranty. Tough decision indeed. I'm more inclined towards EVGA atm. I'll let you know what my build finally ends up with.

Been thinking of AX850 or Seasonic X760 .. at first I was about to go with the CP-850.

Yeah, the 850 should be enough, I'm running two systems with OCed i7 980xs and dual 460s, and both of those peak around 550W. The 570s will burn a little more power, but you'll save some on the cpu, so it should even out somewhat, you'll probably wind up under 600W depending on how much OCing you do.

I hope you know what you're buying?...
http://www.anandtech.com/show/4142/inte ... ins-recall
http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/CS-032263.htm

Intel has a major EPIC FAIL, all P67/H67 chipsets for Sandy Bridge are bugged (SATA 3Gb/s failing). Intel stopped production and shipments, begins recall ALL chipsets. New revision should be ready in one month, full availability in April.

Those chipsets have 2x SATA 6Gb/s ports whose are free of this bug. If mobo with 2 reliable ports is ok for you - no problem. In any other case - dont buy Sandy Bridge until March or something like that, until Intel release new revision of chipsets.

P.S.
