The fan kicked in at ~450W. In the hot box. That's pretty impressive.

Just read the review on jonnyguru. Assuming no coil whine issues, we may have a new winner for mid-range power psus. It does seem a little too crazy how little the fan runs though.

I think that the Seasonic x-460 passive is good enough- it doesn't make any noise (at least not airflow noise) and it has very high efficiency, But it is good to hear on another alternative.

Seems very nice. Super Flower just made a huge leap... and with a relatively low rated model. 550W, so 20% load is 110W. 90% efficiency at 110W is tough. I guess they took their cue from Seasonic re- the "semi-passive" cooling fan. Why not? There's not much heat to dispose of.

I'm mad that I missed this yesterday. I didn't see the article until today.

I guess we'll have to wait for the pricing to stabilize next week to see how it really compares versus Seasonic.

Well with a review by HardOCP also. I think it's clear this unit probably beats the X-series in noise along with being more efficient. Killer stuff. I'd say it's the best psu for any single gpu system bar none right now if price is no object.

Superflower 550W Plantium costs about the same as Seasonic 560W Gold in Taiwan which is acceptable for me given its semi-passive cooling and best efficiency in the industry. Btw, Superflower's Gold PSU's pricing looks very competitive compared to Seasonic/Enermax .....

To think we used to have (quiet-ish) PSUs that were 65-70% efficient; without any PFC...

and loud PSUs that were 50-60% efficient without any PFC.

JonnyGURU doesn't go back that far. http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?na ... ry&reid=32 is a 2007 review of a unit with passive PFC but it gets 75-78% efficiency.

http://www.silentpcreview.com/article20-page3.html from 2002 implies Seasonic PSUs were active PFC but only 65% efficient at that point.

I don't know if there are any reviews still on the web of the truly horrid PSUs that used to come with $20-$50 cases. The kind that would let the smoke out if you put more than 150W load on them for more than 5 minutes or if you were lucky would run forever but would be noisy even when the PC was at idle.

Those PSUs are why I found SPCR in the first place. I was so frustrated with Deer, Enlight, and even Sparkle (which had a better reputation) being so noisy with "noise killing" thermally controlled 80mm fans. I think the fan control made them 20-40% quieter than the older PSUs so it was even worse before that.

Right, my memory of the beginnings of SPCR were that the first PSU that got people excited about how quiet it was, was the Fortron Source 300watt unit with a 120mm fan in it, that had the "Noise Killer" "technology". There were some discussions about some quieter 80mm fanned units, too, but that Fortron Source unit was the one that started things down the path to where they are now.
