Can I use a 300W PSU?

Can I use a 300W PSU?

Post by blahblahbloo » Mon Jul 28, 2003 3:05 pm

Here's my system:

- Tyan Tiger MPX motherboard w/ onboard LAN
- 2 x Athlon MP 2100+
- 1.5 GB PC2100 ECC Registered memory
- Visiontek GeForce 4 Ti 4600
- Adaptec 39160 PCI SCSI adapter
- two PCI LAN cards
- SBLive 5.1
- a floppy drive
- 36 GB Fujitsu MAN series 10k RPM SCSI HDD
- SCSI CD-RW
- SCSI DVD-ROM
- 3 80mm case fans and 1 120mm case fans (all of which happen to be disconnected right now)

Right now my power supply is a PC Power and Cooling Silencer 400 ATX. It's louder than the rest of the system combined, so I want to replace it.

What should I get? Will a Nexus NX-3000 do, or how about a Seasonic SS-400?

I'd add Fortron FSP350-60PN to the list too. You seem to have lots of hot components there, and Fortron is an excellent choice for situations as this, as it really moves air compared to Nexus/Seasonic/Zalman (place PSU with 80 mm fan here).

Seasonic has the Super Tornado, which has 120 mm fan also. But, it's much more expensive than Fortron, and I don't know whether there are other models than just the 300 W one mentioned here.

Cheers,

Jan

But I have a 120mm Panaflo L1A fan on the top of the case that I can run undervolted once I get a couple cables in the mail. If I just need to move air out of the case, I can use that fan, which I'd guess would have less turbulence noise since it doesn't have a PSU sitting right in front of it.

It's a Lian-Li PC62 with a 120mm hole cut out of the top.

Just installed a 400W Seasonic Super Silencer PSU. Unfortunately, it doesn't move enough air to cool the case, so I had to plug the 120mm case fan back in @ 8V. But even with that fan plugged in the system is a lot quieter, at least as long as I don't run Folding@Home.
