400W Titanium PSU

It seems from the press release that the following FSP http://www.plugloadsolutions.com/psu_re ... Report.pdf will actually be coming out. Finally an improvement on my V450S. With it being FSP it might not be that quiet but with 90% efficient at 45/40 Watts I cannot see me buying a PicoPSU unless the bricks get a lot more efficient.

Assuming the product testing is consistent with the released product (it is a Plug Load data sheet and they administer 80+ so I believe it) then this would be amazing. Didn't expect Titanium PSUs at this low a power level so quickly. SPCR review maybe?

It does make me wonder though: what's the fan for? 400W passive PSUs have been very dependable since 80+ Gold, this produces roughly two thirds of the heat so fan cooling appears very conservative. Maybe it could be modded to run fanless?

I don't think FSP actual parts selection would allow for that.

Nice find! I'll see if I can twist anyone's arms at FSP for a sample.

Nice to see titanium PSU starting to be a reality.... wondering if other big PSU manufactuers like Flextronics, Chichony, Delta, Seasonic, Superflower will follow this 2015 with titanium models.

Unlikely: I know that SuperFlower does not have a suitable platform under 650W, Flextronics and Delta have no actual commitment in that market but already have technology from their server units, and as far as I know Sirtec/Sirfa/High Power/HiPro/Chicony (that's the same group) are more probably that not more interested in sorting out their issues with digital controlled PSUs, than developing such a niche.
Seasonic: a while ago I was told from an insider that their Platinum units can be tweaked to hit Titanium, but who knows for sure.

This would be really cool if it happens. The 80 Plus database is chock full of low-power, high efficiency units that never make it to market (or perhaps only as part of certain complete system lines from HP and the likes, particularly those sold only to businesses/governments).

According to Computerbase, Lenovo has had a rebranded version of the same PSU tested.

Well, it's two months later and nothing has happened. The PSU has not even appeared on FSP's consumer website, so it seems clear they are not intending to make it available in the retail market. I inquired about it with both FSP Global and FSP Europe, yet neither have seen fit to respond.

Perhaps we may find some of these units in OEM systems at some point (my guess would be in corporate desktops), but I'm not holding my breath.

It could also be this is a product that has been designed for OEM PR reasons: Create a really cutting edge product, make a big news headline with it, then wait for the OEMs to approach you asking to bebadge it as their own, puts you in a great negotiating position even if this is just a halo product. At the time the test was done there's no reason to believe that series production had even started, it could just be a one off for the purposes of getting the rating.

Wish someone would come out with an over 90% efficiency ~200W PSU even at 10% load. Something to put this list to shame.

Forgot to report back the reply from my FSP contact:
About FSP 400W titanium PSU, this is still in design stage. It’s not MP yet therefore we don’t have sample for any media. We promised that we will prepare one for you as first priority for the propose as you mentioned “#1 acoustic & efficiency oriented computer hardware review”. BTW, this project may go to next stage if there is SI customer who is seeking this kind of product. Thanks for understanding.
As for the 22.5W test list at http://us.hardware.info/reviews/4683/3/ ... -watt-test what the reviewers there fail to mention is that when efficiency is measured in % at low power load, the numerical differences are very misleading. So 77.7% is the high and 57.4% the low among 45 PSUs. That looks like a huge difference. In actual watts at the wall that is 29W vs 39W -- just 10W difference between the highest and lowest efficiency models. About 70% looks like the mean, which is 32W at the wall; so going with the highest efficiency model will save you 3W over the mean.

In other words, at low power loads, improvements in efficiency don't lead to much savings. Which is why there is unlikely to be much incentive for manufacturers to concentrate much on this goal.

Just turn off one light bulb anywhere in the house and you'll get more savings. And if your rig pulls 300W at high load, and you game a lot, and that PSU which is so nicely efficient at 22W isn't quite as efficient at 300W as the other model, it will actually draw MORE power on average.

I was thinking of a psu for a modern fileserver (~g haswell), with ~8-10 3.5" hard drives. At idle, with al the drives sleeping, it can't pull more than 25W. Cpu at 100% and all the drives on should be ~100W. What is a good PSU for something like this?

If I were you I'd look at either the Silverstone ST-30SF or the Cooler Master V550S-M, but I think both lack some SATA connectors.

No need for SATA connectors with things like this - http://www.ebay.com/itm/1to5-computer-A ... 1304051360
