around 700 watt quiet psu for next gen graphics cards
I want a quiet psu to put in my pc before I build my next one and transfer it over.
I'm waiting to upgrade my graphics cards till they come out later this year and I want something high end.
Can you recomend a quiet psu with around 700 watts?
I heard that bigger fans spinning slower make less noise. Also some dont rev up very often.
my current case is top loaded.

Provided your budget will stretch to it, at least Gold rated and fully-modular would be a reasonable aim. In the 600 to 700W category the Corsair RM650X 650w PSU meets these criteria and is semi-passive, that is the PSU fan will not even run until it is under gaming load. So it will be quiet. Available in the UK for around £85. For around £5 less there is the EVGA SuperNOVA G2 Gold 650W fully modular that has a similar specification.
However these prices may just reflect the situation in the UK where 650w and upwards PSUs remain best sellers so manufacturers are willing to compete on price to achieve sales volumes. So it may be different in your particular market. The Be Quiet! Straight Power 10 partly modular Gold units for example are priced at around £90 for the 600w and £100 for the 700w here but might be worth considering if the price differential is better where you are.

Now I'm really considering the Seasonic X-850
can anyone see a downside to that psu over other ones? Anything quieter?

If you're sure you really need an 850w, then the 850W EVGA SuperNOVA 850 P2 Platinum fully modular is a possible alternative and should be cheaper than the Seasonic. Be Quiet! have an 850w Platinum PSU as well, the Dark Power Pro 11 but in the UK it costs a fair bit more than the Seasonic X Gold unit. For around the same price as the Dark Power Pro 11 you can also get the 860w Seasonic Platinum.

I used a SeaSonic X-650 for a while, it was quiet most of the year except in the summer months for me.
Re: around 700 watt quiet psu for next gen graphics cards
Seasonic is now pushing the X series again with finally more differentiated price from the platinum versions (as they were very close for a long time). IIRC, the higher versions are also semifanless so if you have good price, go for it. If you plan two graphics, 650-750 W would be just fine. For single card 550W unit is more than enough.

I'm going for the supernova p2 now.
Re: around 700 watt quiet psu for next gen graphics cards
I found the rmx series of corsair to be the one that don't make the fan spin for the longest time. In my opinion they are more quiet than the supernova

Did you own both a SuperNOVA and an RMx?Mattuz wrote:I found the rmx series of corsair to be the one that don't make the fan spin for the longest time. In my opinion they are more quiet than the supernova

Nope, I read reviews from the same sites for both the two psus and looked at the fan behaviour depending on erogated w (the charts were made with the same test methodology). And the RMX seems to be more "fanless" than the supernova

So which models and which reviews?Mattuz wrote:Nope, I read reviews from the same sites for both the two psus and looked at the fan behaviour depending on erogated w (the charts were made with the same test methodology). And the RMX seems to be more "fanless" than the supernova

This is what I found:
Corsair
EVGA
The corsair is the 1000W model but it doen't change anything because all the series make the fan spin at the same wattage as the graph in Tom's Hardware review of the 750 model say

Does not the EVGA also use ball bearing fan? Those are noisier.

Forget Anandtech, their PSU reviews are useless in an SPCR perspective.
And broadly speaking you may compare only those reviews coming from the same author (so you can compare TPU with some Tom's).
Well, not exactly. If I can take the liberty: first of all, the G2 is not the P2 (the one chosen by the OP), as they have rather different fanless range; secondly, Corsair specs are quite the opposite of what I underlined above; then, within the same series any specific wattage has its own different fanless range, and talking about Corsair the 750W model recorded an hot box fanless range of 375W, while the 1000W model has a fanless range of 500W (look, it's not the same for both); incidentally, the same 500W is the recorded fanless range for the EVGA P2 1000W (so it's the same for both EVGA and Corsair at the same 1000W level); eventually it's well possible that the EVGA 750W P2 may have a shorter fanless range than Corsair 750W (375W) because the 850W P2 has been recorded at just 340W, but that's not certain up to now: mainly because even the 850W G2 showed a "shorter" fanless range (170W) than its smaller 750W G2 sibling (300W), as well as the 1200W P2 (just 360W against those 500W for the 1000W P2); so, all in all your mileage may vary a bit.Mattuz wrote:

It's also true what Behemot wrote, that is Corsair fans kick in more gently than EVGA's ones.
P.S.: I'd add that I appreciated your post, because it showed you read up and accordingly documented your thought: therefore I hope that this mine is not understood just as a mere correction/remark, and that perhaps it may help a bit further.
