Which SILENT psu to get in Europe?

Post by Tobi-Wan Kenobi » Thu Nov 27, 2003 10:41 am

Hi to you all this is my first post here! :D

First of all I would like to thank you guys for the advice you've given to others from which I’ve learnt a lot. :D

Now to my problem, my current psu is very loud and sounds almost as much as my TV with a reasonable volume... It hurts my ears while sitting to long in front of my PC which happens often. :P

So which very silent psu is there to get in Europe? My criterias are silence, stability and airflow. And a reasonable price isn't bad either

So which psus do you recommend? I remind you that the Forton psu is not silent in Europe because of the EU standards.

On a German site I spotted these psus: What do you think?

http://www.blacknoise.de/shop/en_EN/pro ... _Watt.html
ca. 14-19 dB/A

http://www.blacknoise.de/shop/en_EN/pro ... ition.html
Low= 10 dB/A, High = 22 dB/A = Auto = 10 - 22 dB/A

http://www.blacknoise.de/shop/en_EN/pro ... elais.html
ca. 11-20 dB/A

Thanks in advance!

There is a new star on the european sky. The Ultra Silent line from TSP. They are the successor of the former line which where regarded as good working horses for the buy and forget customer. In a review it is rated very good. Unfortunately in german only.

Here the test.
http://hartware.de/review.html?id=362&page=18
The 350W version should be enough for you. Blackline are nearly carbon copies but with a black case.

The sound is measured with quite professional equipment. For a reference, look here. Both sites are cooperating, but this one has not been updated yet. So you have to look at the former tested 420W version.

Here one shop in germany. Does not ship internationally. Only to give you a clue.

If you want both high airflow and low noise then you should look into getting a PSU with a 120mm fan.
Seeing as I live in Denmark I had the same problem when I was selecting a PSU, and decided that I would order from the USA. At this time PSUs with 120mm fans where nowhere to be found, and I ordered a silenX, and it has not disappointed.
But today there are loads of PSUs available with 120mm fans, even here in the EU. I know that in Denmark you can buy some Seasonic models with 120mm fans, and they are reasonably cheap too (399kr)

Tjena TobiWan,

The best alternative yet seems to be http://www.blacknoise.de/shop/en_EN/pro ... elais.html it is a bit expensive but maybee they are worth the money. It is silent if the specs are correct and the 120mm fan should give it a good airflow.

There are some other silent psu in comparism. For example the Zalman 300 AFP wich has been reviewed here as SPCR.

There is only 0.7dB difference between the TSP ultra silent and the zalman 400W in idle mode. I do not consider the zalman to be a silent psu so I do not think the TSP is silent enough :?

But please come with other suggestions... :?:

The choice is quite limited in Europe. After going through a few PSUs I finally stoppped at Zalman. It is not totally silent but keeps very, very quiet. You know, the sound of air flowing ...

Breaking news - got a fast reply from Kool'n'Quiet here in the UK when I asked them about the Seasonic Super Silencer 400 (the highest SPCR ranked PSU):
Hello Martin

Thank you for your e mail.

Yes. These are due in the UK around 8 Dec. The SS-400AGX is the Super Silencer 400. This will come in a retail box with 3 year's warranty. I don't have any firm prices but it will be around £75 retail. Seasonic are fixing the European retail prices.

I'll e mail you when I have firm delivery dates/ prices.

Thanks again.

best regards, Paul Haussauer - Kool 'n Quiet
I for one will be ordering it the minute he has stock!

I must say it is a ****ing jungle out there !

I´m now seriously considering watercooling but it is so expensive..
What do you think? I saw a watercooled psu today it seemed cool  .

Is there a possibility to have a radiator without a fan in watercooling? It must be able to cool down the water for a cpu, gpu, northbridge, harddrive and the psu. Maybee if its big enough? Like a truck radiator .

This I think would be the ultimate solution if a damp the pump...

I feel exactly the same way!

You can have a radiator without a fan.

http://overclockers.com/tips857/

Someone here uses a 17 gallon plastic tank (just for CPU, I think).

HerosFormula uses a pair of oil coolers for PSU & video card, with no flow through them at all so far as I can tell: they seem to be fixed to the side of his case so air can flow over them but not through them.

http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=8344
http://herosformula.org/watercool.htm

JoesGarage has made a fanless radiator.

Use the search function here: there are several examples.
It's also worth looking at the forums at places like overclockers.com etc.

It's unfortunatly only one seasonic model featuring the 120mm fan that I can find here in DK, however there is also a company that sells Fortron/Source PSU's modded with a 120mm papst fan.

I just discovered that a danish shop (the one that has a single Seasonic PSU with a 120mm fan) is also getting the Super Tornado and Super Silencer Series. They are not in stock yet, but I think they are comming this December, since you can win them in their Christmas give-away. So far I can see they will be getting the Super Tornado 350W (595kr), the Super Tornado 400W (695kr) and the Super Silencer 460W (1145kr)

I bought two SS-400 from a German distributor, for EUR 2 x 119 + 19.90 freight to Stockholm.
How about that huh?

Another PSU to consider is a Qtechnology QT-02400G. I just brought one from these guys to replace my seasonic SS300FT - which was driving me insane.

Is the fan in that PSU an 80mm fan?

How do you like it -- noisewise?
