Nexus 3000 or 3500?

Post by TailsNZ » Tue Jan 13, 2004 11:25 pm

Has anyone had to decide between the Nexus 3000 and the newer 3500?

Considering I'm not over clocking or anything, maybe I could keep the 3500 under 150W, which according to the review is where it "is not so quiet any more." Because of the time and difference between reviews though, I'm having a real hard time picking.

I think I'd like to go for the 3500, because it sounds like I'm less likely to need a case fan, which of course would help reduce noise further.

I'd love to know what anyone else who's thought about these two thinks. Thanks!

Well I, for one, have racked my brain over this topic. I'm very close to either the 3500 or the SS400. I think the Nexus looks dang cool and is cheaper, but the SS is rated higher and based on the reviews sounds quieter.

I don't know which one to pick!

Totally agree. The thing putting me off the SS400 is a number of people seem to have had troubles with them (there's a poll somewhere asking who has, the number is shockingly large)... and having to import it to here in New Zealand, I can't take that risk.

But yeah, talk about a tough choice.

Also since I'm hoping to render over night sometimes, and that'll use 100% CPU for like 10 hours... I wonder if it is likely to use over 150W with my AMD Athlon XP 2400+.

I finally decided to go with the SS400 tonight. It was a hard decision, but I figured the Seasonic's 80% effeciency rating will pay for itself over the course of a year or so. I checked the NX-series and it's only got a rating of 65-70%, which is still very good, but that 80% rating is just too good to pass on.

I was really nervous when I read about the Seasonic's fan complaints. I eventually realized there are only a handful of people complaining and the vast majority are very satisfied. One thing I did notice; most of the reported problems were based on subjective complaints without any real objective findings. Afterall, what does a "hum" or a "whine" mean actually?

I'm sure you'll be happy either way. Afterall, both products are very well made and very quiet. If you're going for the Nexus, the 3000 is the cheaper, but damn, that 3500 is a sexy beast. I'm going to vote for the 3500 for you. I was * this close * to getting it myself.

I wonder why the Nexus 3500 isn't anywhere on the recommended list?

Excellent, glad you managed to decide. Yeah 80% is amazing, and with talk of needing more than 300W to power an AMD64 here... 400W might really be the way to go.

Yeah I'm leaning to the 3500 now. Also I hope to put it into an Lian-Li 6070 case, which has a built up fan below the PSU space here. It doesn't have any speed control though, doh.

Thanks, and good luck with the SS400!

I had to SS300's in a row that wouldn't start reliably. The third one I got starts every time, but "subjectively" sounded a lot louder. I've now tried a side-by-side test of the SS300 and the Nexus 3000, and although it may be subjective, I believe that at least 99 out of 100 people would agree with me that the SS300 is much louder.

Someone once posted they had a Nexus 3000 that had a different fan model number than the one reviewed by MikeC. That person also complained his Nexus NX-3000 was noisy. So who knows? I'd like to hear from someone who bought the Nexus NX-3000 within the last few months.

Hi

I had both Nexus 3000 and 3500 home for testing. Both are excellent. I decided to keep the 3500 because of its better airflow and 50 more watts.

Was the post awhile ago? Maybe it will still be in the archives with more detail.

Considering again that cooling was the reason I started all these upgrades, I've decided to go with the Nexus 3500 yeah.

Also on the plus side, I just found a major PC store in New Zealand, and in my own city, that will sell the Lian-Li 6070 "Silent" case for a lot cheaper than I thought... sweet!

Now I've just gotta find a store in NZ that stocks the Nexus, or...

Does anyone know a store that sells the Nexus 3500 and ships worldwide? Thanks!

For a good online store that ships the Nexus 3500 worldwide, you could always use SiliconAcoustics.com...

It was in the past 2-3 weeks, IIRC.
