Hitachi Deskstar T7K250?

Post by computergeek22 » Sun Oct 09, 2005 6:49 pm

How are these drives sound wise? I'm planning to get the 160gb version and many ppl have mentioned that it is quite quiet on newegg reviews. What do you guys think? A good buy for a silent system or not?

I was also thinking about the WD version the Western Digital Caviar SE WD1600JS. Which one of these drives is quieter?

I'm using a Sata2 250GB T7K250, at idle mode it's very quiet, no high frequency whine, the resonation is very low (125GB/platter = 2 platter).

The seek is a bit loud, but this drive arrives in full performance mode. You should use Hitachi feature tool software and set to default acoustic management enabled.
When the acoustic management is enabled, the seek sounds are enough quiet, and the seek performance still remains around 13,2ms.

If you want more quiet seeks, you can easily set a stronger acoustic management, but it will cause performance loss.

I have the 160 gig T7K250 and i am very happy. I can't hear it at idle at all (3 yate loon fans at 1100 rpm, s12 430 psu).... I can hear the seeks, they are defenitly audible, but not unpleasant. I ahve yet to suspend in ym 3000b case, i know when i do it will make a big difference because there is quite a bit of resonance coming from the hard drive when it seeks. However, i am very satisified w/ the T7k250... I currently have it running at SATA II and have not used hte accoustic manager.... id rather have the performance than since i don't mind the seek noise when im usin the puter....

ENJOY, it a great buy.... look around for prices tho, mine was a lot cheaper when i got it on ZZF than newegg, about 4 months ago..
