the 40gb drive is an old 5400rpm barracuda. Seagate says its a "5400.1 family drive". So first gen 5400rpm cuda drive?

the 60gb drive is a barracuda IV, 7200rpm drive.

I dont know much about the old 5400rpm cuda's, but the cuda IV's are among the quietest 3.5" HD's ever produced.

The 40Gb drive doesnt actually say Barracuda unlike the 60 which does say "Cuda"

Would this 40gb still be a cuda?

Barracuda IV was a famous hdd. And it's usually really quiet, it has AAM (Acoustic Management) support unlike other Seagate drives, so I would buy this.

If it's possible to test the drive, use a SMART check program Everest or HDD Sentinel http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Har ... inel.shtml. (especially watch for reallocated sector count parameter)

I wouldn't buy either of them. These hard drives are really slow by todays standards and are probably closing in on their expected life spans. They just aren't worth more then 5-10$. Why not just get on the highest ranking 2.5" drives, Samsung Spinpoint M Series MP0402H, for 43.99$ from newegg.

I have an 80GB Barracuda IV from a few years back. It's not particularly quiet. As always, your mileage may vary when it comes to hard disks. I would get something new and current rather than hope you get a quiet old hard drive.

Idunno about them being any slower than other new 5400rpm drives, but it definately is old, and will definately be closer to its expected life span than something new.

Since your looking at older/slower/quiter drives id also suggest the same as the person i quoted, and go with a new 2.5" drive. The new samsung single platter 5400rpm 2.5" sata drives are quiter, produce less vibrations, and will be just as fast as one of those old cuda IV's.
