Scorpio black and blue

Post by Chris Beard » Tue Feb 23, 2010 7:28 am

Hi all,

Anyone know why the scorpio black is listed by WD as quieter than the scorpio blue? From threads on here the black can be pretty noisy...

Also - which are the single platter scorpio drives, without this crazy larger segmant thingy that screws up XP.

Thanks,
Chris.

I am not aware of any circumstances where a 7200rpm drive like the Black can be quieter than an otherwise identical 5400rpm model. No doubt WD would like to sell the more expensive Black though.

As far as I know, 4KB sectors are only on 3.5" WD 'EARS' models at this time. It does work with XP but requires 512B sector emulation. The smallest Scorpio today is 160GB I think, which is likely to be single platter... I am unsure about the 320GB but at a guess I'd say it would have 2 platters.

The only thing I know for sure is that my Scorpio Blue is dead quiet, I'm lucky if I hear it parking before shutdown.
