Has anybody tested these two drives together? I have the 5400rpm and am getting another drive. Checking the specs on the seagate website gives:
ACOUSTICS (bels) 5400.1
fluid bearing (typ/max-quiet/max-perf) _2.6/2.9/3.0
ACOUSTICS (bels) 7200.7
fluid bearing (typ/max-quiet/max-perf) _<2.2/2.7/3.5
However, I'm not sure whether AAM can be enabled on these drives (will be PATA rather than SATA for avoidance of doubt).
In any case, I would trust our discerning user experience over the numbers any day, so please let me know.
My decision will be based solely on noise level - heat and performance are irrelevant. The drives will be 'mounted' by resting them on foam blocks in the open air (i.e. no case).
Any suggestions experiences would be welcome.

none of them
The 5400 idles typically at 2.5 as specified in manual. that says it all.
The 7200.7 performs always .1 louder than ST360015A, so is out to.
I wonder why you do not consider the SPCR reference ST340016A.
I do not have experience about them, but I am the biggest fan of ST360015A, idling inaudible in silence 3 feet far in my open case, so let me explain you why it surpasses your 2 choices everything-wise:
Acoustics as stated here:
http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/man ... 21374a.pdf
are 2.1 2.4 3.0 typical (the best of non-solid-state 3.5" drives)
not to mention it stores 60 GB and spins at 7200 rpm,
so performances are better too.
It is also easier to find new, and one vendor says it to be able to stand even 65 C, although not confirmed.
You are welcome to give me 1 reason not to prefer this one.

Re: none of them
It may be because the Cuda IV's & V's are pretty hard to get these days. I think they stopped making them some time ago -- the only Cuda IV's I found when I looked a couple months ago were all refurb and the Cuda V's were all out of stock. I ended up with 7200.7's as well.davide_casarin wrote: I wonder why you do not consider the SPCR reference ST340016A.

My ST340016A is so quiet that I've never have been able to tell it is there.
If anyone is really interested in getting a new (unused) one let me know and I will ask my supplier if they still have some sitting around gathering dust. They have shifted to the 7200.7's as their standard HDD now, but they might have a few of the IV's laying around.
