SP1614C VS 1614N... or greater and better?

Post by mcriki » Fri Oct 29, 2004 3:21 pm

Hi to all!
I'm italian and i don't speak very goog english, but I hope that you can understand me :)
This is the situation:
I have 2 HD in my computer:
- barracuda ataV 60GB
- 7200.7 120GB SATA

I'm very happy with barracuda ataV....but 7200.7 is very very noisy for my tastes :((
So i want to change it. I look for a very silent hard disk..as my barracuda ataV.
I would like one greater of 160GB, but unfortunately I have found none of it in the reviews.
I have understood that the hard disk of greater capability that you recommend is Samsung 160GB.
Is it true, aren't there greater HD to the same level of noise? (to understand us: for me my 7200.7 SATA is not enough silence)

For me performance are important, but not as silence..
SP1614C (SATA) is a good choice or SP1614N (PATA) is better?
I change my 7200.7 SATA only for the noise, and I would be certain to make a correct choice! :(
I prefer SATA, but only if I have same level of silence.. I don't use raid because I prefer that they stay turned on the smaller possible number of hard disk and so the difference of performance between PATA and SATA
aren't so important as the noise.

I am very thankful if someone of a lot of expert can advise me!
If you can speak without too much "slang" I can understand without problems :)

Best regards form Italy!!
McR

..problems of noise with 7200.7 aren't due to vibrations, but when it read and write. I have noticed that the PATA version of a friend is quieter.
I read that 1614C and 1614N have the same mechanics..but have they got the same silence?

I've gone through several hard drives including the 7200.7 series (sold it) and the Samsung drives. I have both the SATA and PATA version and I haven't notice a noise different between the two. I have not conducted any performance test among the two Samsung SATA/PATA drives. I've read through the forum threads that there were some noise issues with some of the Samsung drives with certain motors, but I haven't ran into this problem. I've bought three Samsung 160GB drives and haven't had noise issues.

I believe you will be happy with either the SATA or PATA version of the Samsung drives...granted you get one that doesn't exhibit the noise issues that some of the SPCR have mentioned. I've bought the Samsung drives from NEWEGG.COM and (I think) DIRECTRON.COM. Just remember to get some sorbothane to help with noise reduction. Ciao Bella,

Those Samsung drives use either a JVC or NIDEC motor. The NIDEC is the quieter by far so that is what you should look for, ask the people you order from to check which they stock.

From what I've read here, the JVC motors are similar to the Seagate 7200.7 in terms of noise so bear that in mind when looking.

Hope you find one,
Rich

Thx to all,

Hi Ralf, thx.
Do you have picture in Forum of your hard disk with sorbothane-mod?
I can't try sorbothane in Italy, but i can try to find similar, when i I understand what I have to do..or I can find another solution (hard disk boxes etc)

To my knowledge, the SATA and PATA is mechanically similar. The SATA version uses a bridge chip to translate from PATA to SATA. So the only thing you should look for is the NIDEC motor.
