7200.8 AAM?

Post by bomba » Thu Dec 02, 2004 11:47 am

Opened a pdf datasheet for the 7200.8 drives from Seagate's website and found that it indicated sound power specs in bels for (3) modes: idle, quiet seeks and performance seeks. Seems to indicate user configurable accoustic management!

YAY! Hope this isn't premature.

I wonder if it's possible to hack it to set it to AAM levels higher than what's normally available.

I had heard a report on storage review that there was no AAM on the 7200.8 from a chap who had got his just recently. It does sound like he did not really know what he was talking about in terms of SPCR.....we hope!! :)

Or, as in the case of 7200.7, there are two versions of the drive; one with "AAM" on (it cannot be named AAM because of the lawsuit), and one with "AAM" off. Early versions of PATA 7200.7 were shipped with "AAM" on, whereas SATA versions were "AAM" off. Dunno about the current situation.

There's an urban legend that some OEM manufacturers have an utility which can force the 7200.7 to use slow seeks (or fast seeks), hence the two seek levels given in the specs. Maybe such utility is also made for 7200.8? :?

Cheers,

Jan
