7200.8 AAM?
Opened a pdf datasheet for the 7200.8 drives from Seagate's website and found that it indicated sound power specs in bels for (3) modes: idle, quiet seeks and performance seeks. Seems to indicate user configurable accoustic management!
Or, as in the case of 7200.7, there are two versions of the drive; one with "AAM" on (it cannot be named AAM because of the lawsuit), and one with "AAM" off. Early versions of PATA 7200.7 were shipped with "AAM" on, whereas SATA versions were "AAM" off. Dunno about the current situation.
There's an urban legend that some OEM manufacturers have an utility which can force the 7200.7 to use slow seeks (or fast seeks), hence the two seek levels given in the specs. Maybe such utility is also made for 7200.8?
Cheers,
Jan
