A certain piece of recording equipment uses hard drives as its medium. It says that 5400rpm drives work fine. What are some really quiet 3.5" drives that run at 5400rpm? Will these be any more quiet than purchasing 7200rpm?
Thanks

I'd try Samsung V80s. According to c't mag measurements their idle noise is a good bit lower than with the 7200 rpm units (0.4 vs. 0.6 sone for 2-platter units, only 0.2 sone for the single-platter SV0802N), and seeks aren't very loud (decoupling should eliminate them for the most part if there's any room for that). My duallie isn't exactly loud, and it makes virtually no difference in noise whether the SV0802N is running.

BTW, I guess it would be "no difference at all" if the drive were decoupled, but it just sits in a 3.5" drive bay right under the floppy. Maybe I'll tackle that one day.

I've been looking around at possible upgrades for my Sky+ box too but can't find any UK suppliers of Samsung V series 5400rpm drives.
I'll probably end up getting the 200GB Seagate 7200.7+ (ST3200822A) instead.
Need to do something with that annoying fan too ...
