Nobody knows, you can get some ideas from storagereview thread, but even there opinions are divided. I suppose it's way too subjective to make a qualified judgement, even here some ppl say they prefer 7200.7 over samsung...

When can we expect a comparison to the other drives, i.e., Spinpoint Nidec drives to the new Seagate 7200.8 drives?

There are pretty much available everywhere now... Really hoping for a quiet drive, as those 300GB jobs are just over $200.

I would also like to know how the noiselevel is on those harddrives. I'm considering changing my WD 120GB and 200GB Seagate for one SATA 300GB.

I have a 160mb 7200.7 sata nqc

There was another post asking about the 160mb 7200.7 and a comment was made about the new sata maxtors as being noisier than sata seagates, but there were some qualifications which I don't remember. That post was made earlier today. Maybe it will help.

I'm very happy with my 7200.7, but I've only had it for a few days. It seems very quiet and unless I hear something negative about the 7200.8 I will probably get a 300mb 7200.8 as my next drive. The prices on the Maxtors w/16mb buffers are really good though. - FG
