next-gen samsung spinpoints around corner

Post by dan » Sat Jan 22, 2005 9:02 am

while seagate's successor to the 7200.7, the 7200.8 apparently is disappointing in that it is not quieter (and by seagate's own info pdf, it's actually louder) samsung will soon be introducing new spinpoints. while there's no word on its capacity or accoustics, it will feature a faster serial ata chip, as the sp80's use a bridge ata-serial ata bridge chip, the new ones will have sata-ii speeds.

Hi Dan,

Thank you for your inquire into the new Samsung drive. To answer your question, Samsung will also use a FDB motor in this new drive. The drive will be available around Q1. What you are seeing from our competitor is not the native chip set as the one mentioned in our press release. The difference will be that our drives will offer a data transfer rate of 3.0Gb/s.

Thank you,

No, no, no. There will not be a new series of Spinpoints. I have just purchased 2 Nidec motored Spinpoints, and there will definately be nothing just around the corner that is bigger and better... OK!! :) :)

Now if you have to post more info on this, please don't shout as I will be happy to miss it ;)

:)

well "Q1 2005" according to the email samsung gave me. :D

as far as *silence* is concerned you are probably better off with a NIDEC sp80 than a JVC next-gen spinpoint. also, if you are using ata-100, the next gen probably won't make much difference

it's my understanding that since the current sp80's use a bridge uta-sata bridge chip, so it is limited to uta-100. while the next gen uses 3gb/s speeds, and no bridge chip, the HD itself limits transfers to around 80GB/s speed

it's been 2 years since the sp80's were introduced one would hope the aureal densities have since increased.

by the way are there any sp120's? i remember reading about them

Hopefully they stick to the release schedule. I recall this thread, which didn't pan out too accurately.
