while seagate's successor to the 7200.7, the 7200.8 apparently is disappointing in that it is not quieter (and by seagate's own info pdf, it's actually louder) samsung will soon be introducing new spinpoints. while there's no word on its capacity or accoustics, it will feature a faster serial ata chip, as the sp80's use a bridge ata-serial ata bridge chip, the new ones will have sata-ii speeds.

Hi Dan,
Thank you for your inquire into the new Samsung drive. To answer your question, Samsung will also use a FDB motor in this new drive. The drive will be available around Q1. What you are seeing from our competitor is not the native chip set as the one mentioned in our press release. The difference will be that our drives will offer a data transfer rate of 3.0Gb/s.
Thank you,
