400 GB HDDs - Which?
7K400 or 7200.8? Or any OTHERs? (SATA preferred, but can go ATA if ATA versions are quieter, OR if AAM can be enabled ? ? ? )
Which would you guys recommend in terms of noise?

I have the 7200.8 400's and 300 seagates. I used to own 7200.7 200, and some wd 200 jb whiners. At idle the drives are pretty quiet, you can hear the seeks though but I didn't suspend them yet. I know the seagate will make less noise then the hitachi since it's 3 platters vs 5 platters. I noticed a big drop in noise getting rid of my 7 drive system 1 74 raptor 3x 200 jbs 3 x 7200.7 200's. I would think 1 x 400 maybe better then 2x200 even if they are quiet drives. But the 400 needs cooling I think, it's alot hotter then my raptor.

I hear ya...
The reason I mentioned it at all is because I to was in the market for a 400Gb. But I realized that one can almost get 2 wd 320 for the price of one Cuda 400 (Sweden, donno elsewhere) Keep in mind that 400gb 320Gb = just a 20% storage drop. But the cost drops significantly more than 20% (now without exaggeration)...So I at least, went for the WD.

Are you both referring to the Western Digital WD3200JD? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822144394?Shining Arcanine wrote:I am too. The only problem is that he asked for a 400GB hard drive and Western Digital doesn't make 400GB hard drives yet.Poodle wrote:I'm really happy with my new Wb 320 (JB)
Silent and very very very cost effective, at least here in Sweden.
I'm in the market for a large HD (250+) and I'm wondering what to get.
