I see good posts about the Maxtor DM10 series, but how are the normal/old ones?

I've had the Maxtor DM9 6Y120PO ATA 133 hardrive with the fluid dynamic motor for several years, and it has served me well...but
I think it's time to move on. It' has a good bit of vibration and grinding noise that can be felt and heard throughout the case(SLK3000B)
when being accessed. Dunno how it compares to the newer drives, as i havent tried any of them yet. Thought about upgrading to the
new Samsung SATA-II 200 or 250GB drives.

I've mostly played around with Maxtors & Seagates (haven't gotten around to trying a Samsung - too much hassle trying to find one with a Nidec motor) and I must say I'm in love with DM+9s, especially IDE ones. With AAM enabled my DM+9 200GB is the quietest drive I've owned since the Barracuda IV.
It terms of seek noise from quietest to loudest:
DM+9 IDE>very quiet
DM+9 SATA>very quiet
7200.7 IDE>quiet
DM10 SATA>somewhat quiet
7200.7 SATA>loud
They're all pretty much inaudible from a foot away when idle except for the 7200.7 SATA. It vibrates like a mofo. No discernable vibration on the other drives but I do use E.A.R. rubber grommets. All DM+9s and DM10s have fluid bearings, FYI.

Hmm... my experience is entirely different. I had a 200GB PATA DM9, and although seeks were tolerable with AAM enabled, it also had an infuriating ultra high pitched idle whine that drove me absolutely apeshit. It wasn't so much the volume, more the tone and pitch that was objectionable.Amourek wrote:I must say I'm in love with DM+9s, especially IDE ones. When I finally replaced it with a DM10 the relief was indescribable. The old drive is now sitting in a backup server in another room where I can't hear it... maybe I just got unlucky with that particular drive, or maybe my ears are sensitive to that particular frequency...

Wow, this is pretty quiet. I haven't heard it fully seeking (don't know if I can somehow test it), but just going through files, I can't even hear it. It's seems a little slower than the Seagate 7200.7 though.

On the side it will also give a model #. That usually indicates what generation of the DiamondMaxs it is.
I have the OneTouch I, which uses a DM 9+. It's pretty quiet, aside from the seeks, which are best described, by me, as a low grumbling. I have another DM9+ internally inside my case, with the same characteristics. They perform pretty well, although they run a little hotter than the Seagate counterparts.
