Where to find a NIDEC Samsung?

Post by raddiux » Wed Aug 03, 2005 4:22 pm

The title says it all. I am looking for the quietest 80-120gb drive available, and AFAIK thats Samsung. I have 2 of them already and am fairly satisfied, but they are both JVC. I've heard that the NIDEC motors have less whine.

The trouble is, finding a NIDEC drive. I can't just order through newegg and hope that I get one. Does anyone know how to order a Samsung drive while simultaneously finding a NIDEC one?

As far as I know the new Samsungs only have Nidec bearings. This is probably the best way to be sure. The 200GB 2014 version is available at newegg for ~$90.

Thanks for the reply. The system I will be using the drive in doesn't recognize past 137gb, and I don't want to spend over $60, so I will only be getting the 80gb.

Also, how come I never see Samsung drives on sale? When I look on other forums, I always see WD, Maxtor, and Seagate drives for really really cheap, sometimes with rebate, sometimes not. I've never seen a Samsung drive for these prices. Why is this?

I think compared to other manufacturers, Samsung is "minor league". You can find those other drives in places like CompUSA, BestBuy, Office Max, relabeled as Bestbuy/CompUSA brand, etc. They can afford rebates and sales because they already own so much of the market. Samsung needs to keep as high a profit margin as possible. Without a sufficient market penetration, they need to keep prices fairly stable. Hence, not having savings and not passing it on to you.

I am receiving a Samsung SP1614C from Newegg Friday. Although I am hoping for a Nidec motor my current JVC motor Samsung is very quiet. When I receive the drive I will post here the motor type.

wow been a long time since I got my first samsung 1614C 160gb from um directron I think...... nidec was the only motor at the time afaik. The choice of drive was rare and hard to get at the time but this site told me it was worth waiting for. SPCR wins again.

Just got another one for backup from newegg today (ok oct 3 it's pretty darn close to yesterday in a few mins) and it's a nidec as well so well no idea , ever yet to see a jvc. Oh newegg rocks as does SPCR.

mass heartfelt feelings for samsung, spcr and newegg, stop this gushing please!

Cheers!

Liquidated, Wow you have just raised my hopes that the SP1614C that I will be receiving from Newegg on Friday will be a Nidec. Fingers crossed.

The 2 200GB drives I got from Newegg 2-3 weeks ago (wow, it's taken me that long to get all the parts & put this thing together (only at 90% built)?!?!?! Sheesh! ) were both Nidec drives. They were manufactured 12/2004, though.

Seems like i'll just have to take my chances again and hope I get a NIDEC. If anyone else has recently purchased a Samsung drive, please chime in and mention what motor you ended up getting and where you got it from. Thanks!

I bought a Samsung SP1213C 120GB SATA drive in early June. It has a JVC motor.

I bought the same model one year ago and that one has a Nidec motor.

I received my 160GB Samsung SATA from Newegg yesterday and it had a JVC motor. Luckily, the new drive is dead quiet so I am not going to use AAM.

only Microcenter both:

a) has nidec's still around
b) has the patience/expertise to check for you physically if you ask them.

try a branch and see. (they did it for me and many other people)

Look at the model number. If it ends in a 'C' then it's a JVC one, if it ends in a 'N', its a Nidec one.

You're kidding for sure... It would be too easy if all sata drives were jvc while pata were nidec.
Even Gerbil, a few posts above said he had two sp1213c, one nidec and one jvc.
Sorry if i'm missing something...

The post about model numbers indicating JVC or Nidec motors is not correct. The C indicates SATA and the N indicates PATA. Both models can and do come with both motor types.

I have two 120's with Nidec motors that I'd sell you for $57.50 a piece plus shipping if you want them.

I ordered a 200GB SATA samsung from Zipzoomfly and it got a unit with a Nidec motor. Very quiet, but haven't tested yet as my Dell hasn't arrived and my zmax-DP is too damn loud.

My mistake. I just saw that the SPCR review of the Samsung drives which commented on the Nidec motor had the 'N' suffix after. I made the wrong assumption. At the time I didn't know that the PATA and SATA models shared an extreemly similar model number.

Otherwise I might have considered the Samsung over the Maxtor DiamondMax 10 250GB I've got. Though it shouldn't make much of a difference, as I'll be using this drive as a secondary one once I get my Western Digital Raptor back (it failed...) and I'll be using that as a primary.

I just got my 80GB Spinpoint from Newegg today. I forgot to check for the Nidec/JVC when I put it in. I turned on the power and the thing was dead silent. I couldn't believe it. I turned it off and checked and it is a Nidec. Good luck on getting a Nidec.
